Ontario awards $300,000 research grant to help develop the world's first beer brewed from cannabis

The Ontario government has contributed $300,000 to help a Toronto company work with Loyalist College in Belleville to develop what it says will be the world’s first beer brewed from cannabis.

The joint project will create a beer that is “highly intoxicating” but safer and healthier than alcohol, says Province Brands of Canada. The company chipped in $300,000 in cash and in-kind services.

Province Brands joins cannabis industry giant Canopy Growth Corp. in Smiths Falls in betting that drinks will become a dominant way that Canadians consume their marijuana when it’s legal.

County in the midst of a green gold rush

Marijuana is beginning to account for a noticeable share of “Ontario’s Garden.”

During his state-of-the-county address this week, Mayor Charlie Luke said it is full steam ahead for industrial marijuana production in Norfolk County.

New capacity is being added all the time. Some is devoted to the medicinal market while others are preparing to produce recreational marijuana once it becomes legal in Canada this summer.

Mayor Luke delivered the annual state-of-the-county address during a breakfast meeting Wednesday at the Greens at Renton. The event was sponsored by the Simcoe & District Chamber of Commerce.

In his speech, Luke shared progress reports on three operations representing millions of dollars in investment.

Assembly of First Nations wants provinces, territories to butt out of First Nations marijuana sales

Resolution passed at Special Chiefs Assembly calls for a cut of tax revenue from cannabis sales.

First Nations chiefs on Wednesday called on the federal government to amend its marijuana legalization legislation to prevent provincial regulations from applying on reserves.

Chiefs passed a resolution at a Special Chiefs Assembly in Gatineau, Que., directing the Assembly of First Nations to lobby the federal government to make the amendment to Bill C-45, which is currently before the Senate.

The resolution also called for First Nations to be included in the excise tax revenue sharing framework, which is currently split 75 per cent to 25 per cent between the provinces/territories and Ottawa.

MedReleaf seeking buyer as pot industry consolidates

MedReleaf Corp., the Markham, Ont.-based grower of medical cannabis, is in play and has contacted multiple larger players in the marijuana industry about a sale, sources say.

The most serious discussions are happening with Aurora Cannabis Inc., said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the talks are private.

A transaction would marry two heavyweights in the legal cannabis industry to create the largest player by market capitalization. Buying MedReleaf would give Aurora access to more supply of weed ahead of Canada’s move to legalize and regulate the recreational use of the drug.

Aurora and MedReleaf declined to comment.

Renfrew County has concerns over pot legalization

With the impending legalization of marijuana, Renfrew County councillors continue to have questions about enforcement at least as it pertains to public consumption of pot.

With the Trudeau government pushing legalization through the Senate to the committee stage, it's anticipated recreational marijuana will be lawfully permitted across Canada by late summer. While local law enforcement are training officers to investigate roadside impairment by marijuana, municipal councils may have to implement their own bylaws to control where cannabis can be consumed.

In advance of legalization, Ottawa offers a crash course in cannabis law

When the University of Ottawa announced that it would be offering a two-week intensive course in cannabis law, co-teacher Megan D. Wallace didn’t expect it would be a newsworthy event.

“I didn’t think anyone would care,” says Wallace, who’s head of Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall’s Not-for-Profit and Charity Law Group. “But we’ve had 20 or 30 media inquiries, which I was really surprised by because it’s a class at a law school. I think this is just so new that people are intrigued by it.”
