6 Burning Questions About Oregon's Newly Legal Marijuana

At the stroke of midnight on July 1, recreational marijuana became legal in the state of Oregon. Thanks to Measure 91, passed by voters last November, the Beaver State now joins Washington, Colorado, Alaska and the District of Columbia as the only U.S. jurisdictions where cannabis users can toke up freely.

Here are your top questions about this new development, answered.

Dude! So, like, how legal is legal?
Oregon has, arguably, the least restrictive regime in the county. At home, Oregonians can keep up to eight ounces — that's half a pound! — of pot. It's also now legal to grow up to four mature plants per residence. But be careful: Out on the streets, the legal limit in your pocket is only one ounce.

Oregon medical marijuana growers prepare to expand into new retail recreational markets

WILLIAMS, Ore. — Forty-two years after Oregon became the first state to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana, the state is taking its first steps along a road leading to state-licensed stores selling limited amounts of it to anyone over 21.

"Oregon has long been a pioneer on sensible marijuana policies," said Anthony Johnson, chief petitioner on Measure 91, which on Wednesday makes Oregon the fourth state to adopt laws legalizing recreational use of cannabis for people old enough to drink.

He added though that he doesn't expect much increased demand for it.

Smoking it in public is illegal, but in Portland police are discouraging residents from calling 911 to report smokers.

The Oregonian grows weed

Yep, you read that right. The Oregonian/OregonLive is taking a stab at growing its own weed.

We've got two seeds (Blackdog variety) and two clones, or starter plants (Dogwalker OG variety). Enough to max out the four-plant limit per household Oregonians 21 and over are allowed. Plus, the bonus of a passionate cannabis gardener and weed science-geek, Jeremy Plumb, to help get us started. He serves on four cannabis-related boards and is the founding member of Farma cannabis dispensary at SE 9th and Hawthorne.

Who's growing it?

Thousands gather on Portland bridge as Oregon eases into era of legal marijuana

PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon began easing into an era of legal marijuana Wednesday after an early morning pot celebration at the center of Portland.

A few thousand people jammed a sidewalk and bike lane on the Burnside Bridge at midnight Tuesday and counted down the moments until July 1. That's the date voters established for adults to be able to legally possess and grow limited amounts of marijuana for personal use.

With the vote last fall, the state became the fourth with legal pot, after Colorado, Washington and Alaska. More than 40 years earlier, Oregon was the first state to decriminalize small amounts of pot.

"Oregon has long been a pioneer on sensible marijuana policies," said Anthony Johnson, chief petitioner on Measure 91, the legalization initiative.

Oregon: Security Firms Gear Up For Marijuana Legalization

Recreational marijuana is legal in Oregon starting today. And with it comes a host of new business opportunities.

But it's not just people growing and selling pot who are preparing to cash in.

Marijuana is not like other cash crops. People don't typically raid wheat fields or break into grain bins. But Noah Stokes of CannaGuard Security in Portland said the high value of pot makes it a frequent theft target.

Stokes said the underground nature of the marijuana business has meant many growers haven't invested in state-of-the-art security systems.
