Oregon aims to tax legal marijuana less than other states

Lawmakers moved methodically to ensure that when Oregonians take a drag on their first legal recreational-marijuana cigarettes or plant their first legal seeds Wednesday, that they have the full weight and force of the state behind them.

One bill sent to the governor aims to tax marijuana less than two of the three other Western states where recreational use is legal, a bid to keep smaller producers in the legal-growing system.

Oregon Is Celebrating Marijuana Legalization With Free Weed

Not only are people free to smoke weed—the weed is free.

As of July 1, new Oregon laws go into effect making it legal for adults ages 21 and up to possess and use recreational marijuana. It’s legal to grow marijuana in the state—up to four plants per residence, out of public view—and share it with other of-age adults too.

Applications for large-scale growers and retailers aren’t being accepted until early 2016, and no Oregon stores are expected to have marijuana for sale until the fall of 2016. For the time being, then, while recreational marijuana use is legal, people aren’t allowed to buy or sell it.

Oregon: What consumers need to know about recreational marijuana for July 1

Can I get busted before Wednesday?

In Linn County, the answer is an emphatic yes, and in Benton County, it depends on the case, said local prosecutors.

“If you do something illegal, our office will be prosecuting it,” said Linn County District Attorney Doug Marteeny, who said that represents the will of the voters. Marijuana cases active today also will continue to be prosecuted in Linn County, even after that behavior becomes legal July 1. Marteeny was unaware of any cases where only illegal marijuana behavior is being prosecuted, and that behavior will be legal on Wednesday.

Pot will be legal in Oregon — but you can't buy it

It's being called the second immaculate conception.

Come Wednesday, adults 21 and older will legally be allowed to possess and use recreational marijuana in Oregon.

But complicating this new, hard-fought-for freedom is one niggling detail: Potential users must receive their marijuana as a gift or get it on the illegal black market because there are still no licensed retail stores in Oregon where law-abiding residents can buy it.

Simply put, residents can smoke and inhale pot, eat brownies baked with it or rub lotions containing the oils into their skin; there's just no legal way to purchase it.

Recreational Marijuana Sales Likely To Start October 1st In Oregon

Oregon voters approved legalizing recreational marijuana during the 2014 Election. The cultivation and possession provisions of the initiative go into effect in less than a week (July 1), but the roll-out of legal sales will have to wait. If some lawmakers in Oregon have their way, the wait would not be that long. A bill that would allow established medical marijuana dispensaries to sell limited amounts of recreational marijuana to adults starting October 1 passed a key hurdle today. Per Oregon Live:

Portland police: Bringing marijuana from Washington into Oregon 'not an issue'

Portland police said Wednesday that Oregonians who travel to Washington to buy marijuana only to bring it back into the state are "not an issue" as long as they stick with what the law allows them to possess.

Starting July 1, anyone 21 and older may possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana away from home and up to eight ounces at home.

Oregonians shopping for cannabis in Washington are nothing new. May sales data released by the Washington Liquor Control Board showed that one Vancouver shop sold more marijuana than any other shop statewide -- thanks in part to Oregonians, who made up about 50 percent of sales.

Portland police said the issue isn't on their radar.

Oregon marijuana regulation bill easily clears House and heads for Senate

A sweeping bill that sets up the framework for Oregon's upcoming legal marijuana market was handily passed by the state House on a 52-4 vote Wednesday.

The measure would put new limits on medical marijuana growers, make it easier for 15 eastern Oregon counties to prohibit retail sales of the drug and reduce penalties for many of the state's remaining marijuana-related crimes.

In addition, House Bill 3400 lays out new testing and packaging requirements covering marijuana and other cannabis-infused products.

Cannabis Industry Flexes Its New Political Muscle

It was a classic political fundraiser — semi-formal, with chicken, potatoes and salad on the menu.

The jovial donors sipped gin cocktails and Oregon pinots at the Left Bank Annex on Portland’s East Side earlier this month.

But the 300 attendees who came to support Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Oregon, represent a newly energized group: They’re members of the cannabis industry, now in an era where their product is legal for recreational use.

“People that I’ve been working with — in some cases for years dealing with trying to modernize our marijuana laws — came together and they threw me a little party,” Blumenauer said. “It was great fun.”
