Marijuana supporters see reasons for optimism

WILKES-BARRE — When Les Stark of the Keystone Cannabis Coalition organized a rally in Wilkes-Barre last year, he was excited at the prospect of new state laws on medical cannabis and industrial hemp.

He’s still waiting, but the status of marijuana in Pennsylvania may be changing. Several bills are moving through the state Legislature. Stark, of Exeter Township in Berks County, is confident that when he organizes an event next year in the city, medical cannabis and farmed hemp will be legal in the state.

States with Legal Marijuana See 25 Percent Fewer Prescription Painkiller Deaths

One unexpected benefit of medical marijuana legislation appears to be a decrease in painkiller overdoses, perhaps because some chronic pain patients are turning to cannabis instead of powerful opioid drugs.

In states with laws legalizing medical marijuana, new research shows there are nearly 25 percent fewer deaths from painkiller overdoses. Opioid painkiller overdoses are a growing problem nationwide. More than 16,500 Americans died of opioid drug overdoses in 2010, and the numbers continue to rise.

Although a casual relationship hasn’t been proven, there appears to be a significant association between marijuana legislation and a fall in overdose deaths.

Even as laws change, the 'M' word is banned in head shops

PHILADELPHIA You still can't say "marijuana" in the head shop.

For years, the stores that sell marijuana pipes and bongs have insisted that the products they sell are for tobacco use, choosing their words carefully to avoid being ensnared in laws against marijuana paraphernalia.

As states and cities across the country have lowered the penalties for possession, a patchwork of federal, state and local laws means little has changed at the head shops.

“The map of the United States is colorful as to where you can lawfully buy paraphernalia and not use magic code words,” said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Parents Demand Medical Marijuana for Epileptic Kids

PITTSBURGH — In room 716 of the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, 12-year-old Hannah Pallas is motionless, but for an occasional turn of her head and blink of her eyes, following a series of life-threatening seizures. On the same day, 5-year-old Sydney Michaels is down the hall in room 749, waiting to be discharged after 15 grand mal seizures within 36 hours.

Their mothers have known each other for years, though it's a hapless coincidence caused by their daughters' epilepsy that brings them to the pediatric unit on the same day.
