Pennsylvania could soon legalize medical marijuana. Here's where other states stand

Pennsylvania could soon become the 24th state to legalize medical marijuana. On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania House passed an amended version of a Senate-passed medical marijuana bill, and the Senate and Gov. Tom Wolf have signaled that they will soon approve the legislation, turning it into law.

The Marijuana Policy Project, which supports legalization, summarized the bill:

Pennsylvania House passes medical marijuana bill

Beth McCormack of Camp Hill was among a group — some with sick children and some sick themselves — who celebrated on Wednesday evening after watching the House finally pass a medical marijuana legalization bill 149-43.

Many had lobbied for the bill for more than two years, and endured let downs and frustration as public opinion swung strongly in favor of medical marijuana and the state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill, but the House let eight months pass before Wednesday's final vote.

"I feel like I can see the end of the the road. I feel like I can see health in my future for the first time in 18 years," said McCormack, 33, who has suffered from medication-resistant epilepsy since being injured in a fall during her late teens.

The Shake: 4/20 Cannabis Cup Bolts to California, Public Use in Toronto Ends, and Bernie Inhaled but Didn’t Enjoy

4/20 Cannabis Cup now in San Berdoo! OK. For reals. We think the 4/20 Cannabis Cup has actually found a home. After getting kicked out of the Denver Mart and then failing to secure the permits to hold the annual bacchanal in Pueblo, Colo., it looks like the good folks at High Times have moved the event to San Bernardino, Calif. Michael Roberts, reporting for Westword, follows the thread to the NOS Center in San Berdoo, which has hosted previous (medical) California Cannabis Cups. The U.S. Cannabis Cup, with its competitions and cannabis carnival booths, will take place there April 15–17.

Pennsylvania: Marijuana enforcement, not marijuana, is what's harmful, supporters tell officials

Marijuana isn't the reason people turn to a life of crime, but rather an arrest for marijuana possession that can push some people down the wrong path.

That was the sentiment of several people who spoke Thursday night in favor of Harrisburg's proposal to reduce the criminal penalties for small amounts of marijuana. The supporters said marijuana is much less harmful than other legal substances such as alcohol or prescription drugs.

Pa. House Speaker ready for medical marijuana debate

Last fall, Pennsylvania's medical marijuana bill was put on the House calendar for several months, but a floor vote never took place. That could change on March 14.

House Majority Leader Dave Reed (R-Indiana) has been supportive of the measure, known as SB 3, and has pledged to put it on the calendar again in two weeks. That earned praise from Gov. Tom Wolf.

"As I have said for years, I support the legalization of medical marijuana and I believe it is long past time to provide this important medical relief to patients and families across the commonwealth," Wolf said in a statement.

Medical Marijuana Is Finally Coming to the Keystone State

Following 14 excruciating months of infighting and delays, Pennsylvania legislators are expected to legalize medical marijuana at their next session’s March 14, 2016 kickoff.

Specifically, Pennsylvania’s State House will vote on “Senate Bill 3” which the Senate overwhelmingly approved in a different form on Jan. 26, 2015.

In the interim, Senate Bill 3 was substantially modified increasing the covered medical conditions, limiting the allowable cannabis forms and imposing a “THC cap,” reducing the number of permitted growers, processors and dispensaries, and vesting legalized marijuana’s oversight and regulation with Pennsylvania’s Department of Health and its’ newly created “Advisory Board.”

Medical marijuana amendments, vote planned in Pennsylvania House

Pennsylvania's bill to create a medical marijuana program is nearing a vote in the state House of Representatives, where amendments to the proposal abound.

House Majority Leader David Reed, R-Indiana, plans to bring the measure, Senate Bill 3, up for a vote when members return from recess the week of March 14, said Steve Miskin, spokesman for the House Republican leadership.

Passed 40-7 in the Senate last May 12, the bill is bound to go back before the Senate — if passed by the House — because of the amendments to be considered, Miskin said.
