Celebrity Advocates At The Democratic National Convention

Don't hold your breath in hope of hearing presidential nominee Hillary Clinton or her vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine discuss marijuana at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this week. Clinton is, at best, a tepid supporter of marijuana reform while Kaine opposes legalization. But cannabis will be represented at the DNC by a number of pro-legalization celebrities who are showing up to support (or protest) the event.

Here are six famous advocates to look for.

Activists March 51-Foot 'Joints' Toward DNC

Supporters of former US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders held a giant inflatable joint and called for the legalization of marijuana during a rally in Philadelphia.

Two large “joints” passed through downtown Philadelphia Monday as marijuana advocates marched toward the Democratic National Convention’s headquarters to call for the full legalization of the leafy drug.

Gov. Wolf: Access To Medical Marijuana Will Come to Pennsylvania Sooner Than Later

Pennsylvania’s Department of Health expects to begin working soon with physicians from health systems and professional organizations as it writes medical marijuana program regulations.

Secretary of Health Karen Murphy said Tuesday that her department also will seek guidance from the physicians on carrying out the medical marijuana law’s research program.

The department says it’ll take until early 2018 to make medical marijuana available to eligible patients. However, Gov. Tom Wolf tells the “KDKA Morning News” it won’t take that long to get access.

51-Foot Marijuana Joint Coming to Philly for the DNC

When the Democratic National Convention comes to town next week, the city will be abuzz with activity at a time when marijuana activists find themselves making political progress much quicker than they’d imagined they ever could.

So, it only makes sense that several DNC events will have a marijuana sensibility to them, none more visually compelling as activists and supporters’ plans to march a 51-foot joint from City Hall to the Wells Fargo Center.

Before we get to the litany of events planned, let’s talk a bit about what goes into not only making a 51-foot joint, but how to transport such a thing the near-length of South Broad Street.

How Cannabis Is Helping One Company Research Treatment of CTE

“Imagine if you said to Paul Tagliabue, back in 2003, that Ricky Williams might one day be able to save Junior Seau’s life…”— Thoma Kikkis, co-founder of Kannalife Sciences

Imagine that it’s the year 2025. In locker rooms across the NFL, as ankles are taped and braces strapped on, trainers hand out gel capsules for players to ingest minutes before they take the field. The capsules are scientifically designed to protect against the deleterious effect of concussive blows to the head and traumatic brain injury—and, as a result, they have helped to sustain the viability of the sport of football. Oh, and yeah, they are derived from marijuana.

Medical Marijuana Conference Has Attendees Buzzing About the Future

After a five-year struggle in the General Assembly, Pennsylvania became the 25th state to legalize medical marijuana on Apr. 17. But it will take at least six months for the Dept. of Health to craft regulations that permit this new industry to begin, with a couple of years of road-testing after that.

This process began with a bang at St. Joseph’s University on Jul. 8, where State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery), the prime sponsor of Act 16, convened a “Medical Marijuana Regulatory Palooza” that drew 300 experts from across the nation – physicians, lawyers, businesses, producers, patients and public officials – to share their experiences in the industry, in hopes that the Keystone State can learn from others’ successes and snafus.

One of the Big Questions in Marijuana Research Has Been Answered

0.32 grams.

That's how much marijuana is in the typical American joint, according to a rigorous statistical analysis recently published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence by drug policy researchers Greg Ridgeway of the University of Pennsylvania and Beau Kilmer of the Rand Corp.

The amount of weed in the typical joint is actually an important quantity for researchers and policymakers to know. Marijuana is often sold by the joint in both legal and illegal markets. If you want to know how much weed people are consuming — which is highly important for things such as tax projections and public health studies — you need to know how much weed is in those joints.

Pennsylvania Firm Sees Growth Potential in Medical Marijuana Market

From the start, Lalit Chordia wants this to be clear: His manufacturing outfit in O'Hara is not a medical marijuana company.

It just happens that a high-pressure extraction method long mastered by Thar Process Inc. works wonders in producing treatments from the plant — namely pills, Chordia said.

Now that Pennsylvania has approved medical marijuana in limited forms — including those pills — he wants his business to stake a prime spot in the state's emerging production market for the drug. The company president figures Western Pennsylvania suppliers for his extraction systems could add a couple of dozen workers to meet new demand, not including positions that Thar Process might add to its own payroll of about 30 workers.

Press Conference: Pennsylvania House Judiciary Plans To Raise Marijuana Fines

The Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee has scheduled a vote on a bill, HB 1422, that seeks to massively increase fines for marijuana possession.

Although HB 1422 downgrades 30 grams of marijuana or less from a misdemeanor to a summary, those convicted will live with the burden of a criminal record.

Legislators, marijuana reform advocates and potential medical marijuana patients will speak in Harrisburg about the problems with HB 1422 tomorrow. The press conference takes place in the East Wing Rotunda at 2:00PM on 6/14.

Chris Goldstein is on the Board of Directors at PhillyNORML and has extensively researched marijuana arrest statistics in Pa.

Medical Marijuana Opening Door to Business Opportunities

More than a decade after he retired from practicing podiatry, Dave Feller said he might be inclined to get back into the workforce due to the many employment opportunities that will open up now that medical marijuana has been legalized in the state of Pennsylvania.

“I want to see what medical conditions are allowed to be treated with medical marijuana and if podiatry is one of them,” said Dr. Feller, 65, of Butler. “If people are in pain and this law will allow treatment of medical marijuana, this is another avenue to use other than opiates and anti-inflammatories.”

The way he sees it, the medical marijuana industry could not only provide an alternative when it comes to treating patients in pain, it could be a way to supplement his retirement income.
