Almost half of Britons support the legalization of cannabis, according to a survey commissioned by a group associated with the ruling Conservative Party.

Tilray has managed to successfully import its first bulk supply of medical cannabis oil into the UK.

Over the past three years, while Canadian licensed producers were raising millions in investor dollars from boutique investment firms on Bay Street, Scott Boyes embarked on a different route in the hunt for capital, one that led him to family offices and high net worth investors parked in the U.K.

“Bay Street — the Canaccords and Echelons and GMPs — were funding Canadian licensed producers that weren’t going to have any revenue or earnings for years. My U.K. partners said, ‘Look, we’ll get this funded, just come over to London,’” said Boyes, the chief executive of MPX International, which has cannabis cultivation and retail assets in Europe and South Africa and is listed on the CSE.

Tilray Inc. (TLRY.O) has imported its first bulk supply of medical cannabis oil into the U.K., after controversy over the confiscation of one of the Canadian company’s products led to an easing of restrictions.

The oral solution, containing both the psychoactive THC and non-intoxicating CBD compounds, is used to treat pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and multiple sclerosis-associated spasticity. It has already been supplied in bulk to Germany, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. reports it has completed its first commercial export of cannabis oil to the United Kingdom and the product has been successfully dispensed from a pharmacy. “Authorities there recently granted the company approval for its first shipment of medical cannabis into the U.K. from Canada under its new legal framework that came into effect on Nov. 1, 2018,” notes a press release from Edmonton-headquartered Aurora, which has a funded capacity in excess of 500,000 kg a year and sales and operations in 22 countries across five continents.

Canopy Growth Corp. (WEED.TO 0.61%) has joined forces with a U.K. researcher of cannabis-based therapies after the British government moved to liberalize the use of medical marijuana.

The new company, formed with Beckley Canopy Therapeutics Ltd., aims to make products available in Britain from early this year. The government made it legal for specialist doctors to prescribe medical marijuana for patients with severe clinical need in November.

The decision came after studies showed that it could benefit children with conditions such as severe epilepsy, although the government said it was not a step toward legalizing cannabis for recreational use.
