Spain detains druglord on Britain's most-wanted list

Spanish police said Monday they have arrested a suspected British drug trafficking boss who is listed among Britain's 10 most wanted fugitives.

Police detained Michael Roden along with six other suspected members of a drug trafficking ring earlier this month in the province of Granada in southwestern Spain, a police spokesman said.

Roden, also known by his nickname "Dodge", is wanted by British police in connection with the importation of 70 kilos (155 pounds) of cannabis into Britain from Spain in 2013.

The 26-year-old was convicted in October 2010 in Britain of large-scale production of cannabis and jailed for three years.

He was released early the following year, but failed to meet his probation conditions and is wanted for recall into prison.

Cannabis-derived drugs to target diabetic kidney failure

Dr Mirela Delibegovic is carrying out research to see if certain cannabinoids can be used to tackle diabetic nephropathy

New substances derived from cannabis are being used to tackle kidney failure caused by diabetes, as part of a new research project led by the University of Aberdeen.

Approximately 40% of people with diabetes develop kidney failure (diabetic nephropathy) as a result.

The project, funded by Diabetes UK, will explore whether these synthetic cannabinoid compounds can be used to make the kidneys respond better to insulin.

Synthetic cannabis compounds used to tackle diabetes linked kidney failure

New substances derived from cannabis are being used to tackle kidney failure linked to diabetes as part of a new research project.

Around 40% of people who have diabetes go on to develop kidney failure, also known as diabetic nephropathy.

The project, being led by the University of Aberdeen, is looking at whether synthetic cannabinoid compounds can help the kidneys respond better to insulin, the hormone everyone with type 1 diabetes needs to take to control their blood glucose levels.

Plymouth MP says cannabis 'should never be legal' following Westminster debate

A PLYMOUTH Tory MP says cannabis will never be made legal under his watch.

This comes as a significant debate was held at Westminster Hall earlier this week detailing the positives and negatives of the drug's potential legalisation.

Oliver Colvile, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, was hoping to speak at the debate but maintains his views "are against recreational cannabis".

However Mr Colvile, who has questioned in the past whether marijuana should be available on the NHS to ease the pain of those suffering from multiple sclerosis, says there is still a case for its medical use.

He said: "I'm very sympathetic to people with neurological issues and I think they should have access to it.

10 Changes That Would Occur if Cannabis Was Legalised in the UK

Cannabis legalisation is a hot topic right now across the world, including in the United Kingdom. A recent petition, signed by over 228,000 people, prompted a debate by MPs on the subject, and an ever growing number of current and former politicians, scientists, and public figures have called for an end to prohibition.

Among all the hyperbole and misinformation it can be difficult to get to the truth of just what would happen if the British government decided to legally regulate the production and sale of the Class B drug. With that in mind, here is a list of ten things that would occur as a consequence of full legalisation.

Drug experts call for Britain to legalise cannabis NOW

A retired top cop, the Government's former chief drugs adviser and a police and crime commissioner are among a growing number of respected professionals joining stoners to call for a change in the law.

They claim the UK is wasting £500million a year and scant police resources on a "war on drugs" it CAN'T WIN and targeting patients and pot-heads alike for something 60% of young people have at least tried.

Many western countries – including the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Germany and  – have legalised or decriminalised marijuana in some form.

James McEnaney: Why we must get serious about drug decriminalisation

CommonSpace columnist James McEnaney says it's time officials changed their thinking on drugs policy

IN the early 20th century, America spent years fruitlessly pursuing a policy of prohibition. The goal was to prevent the production, import, sale and consumption of alcohol; the result was an environment in which crime and drug addiction increased and organised crime built the foundations of an empire which endures to this day.

UK: Cannabis convictions plummet by more than a quarter in Buckinghamshire

However, number of people admitting to using cannabis in the South East has gone up

The number of people caught with cannabis has fallen by more than a quarter in four years in Buckinghamshire.

There were 874 cannabis possession offences recorded in the county back in 2011/12.

That compared to 634 in 2014/15 - the last full year's worth of figures.

This makes a fall of 27.5 per cent in four years.

The number of people admitting to cannabis use in the South East has actually gone up very slightly over this same four-year time period.

Some 6.9% of people in the region told the Home Office they had used the drug in a survey in 2014/15.
