UK: MPs Forced To Consider Debate On Legalising Cannabis Next Month

An e-petition to legalise cannabis managed to reach 100,000 signatures at the end of July, the milestone means MPs are forced to consider debate the issue in Parliament.

Outlining benefits of decriminalising the drug, citing financial, policing and employment boons, the call to “Make the production, sale and use of cannabis legal” has now been backed over 190,000 times.

The Petitions Committee will meet in September to decide a date for when the House of Commons will discuss the issue. The body has previously said that petitions with over 100,000 names are “almost always” debated.

Drug smuggler caught with £100k cannabis in suitcase

A drug smuggler was caught arriving at Edinburgh Airport with a suitcase filled with with cannabis worth more than £100,000 on the streets.

Henry Alden was intercepted by border control officers after picking up the case when he arrived on a flight from Barcelona.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Alden, 20, claimed he had been in the Spanish city for a fortnight but enquiries revealed he had flown from Luton to Barcelona five days earlier.

Prosecutor Bruce Erroch told the court: “He advised the officers that the suitcase was his, that he had packed it himself and that he was not carrying anything for anyone else.”

Slippery Slope: The Master of the Game

Sales of new anticoagulant drugs are booming, thanks to their convenience -- but thanks also to new guidelines that endorse their use and new risk scale that greatly expands the pool of potential patients.

At the center of both guidelines and risk assessment is Gregory Lip, MD, a British heart doctor with extensive financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry.

For years, Lip has worked as a paid speaker and consultant to companies that make novel (or newer) anticoagulants (NOACs), which are marketed for prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation as well as for prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Detox or lose your benefits: new welfare proposals are based on bad evidence and worse ethics

When is a choice not really a choice? It could be argued that the latest proposal from the government aimed at people who have problems with drugs and alcohol is not a choice but an ultimatum – accept help for your problem or lose your right to welfare benefits.

Teenage cannabis smokers face NO increased risk of mental or physical health problems, shock ...

Researchers 'surprised' after watching adolescent weed lovers dodge depression, psychosis and even asthma.

Heavy weed smoking during adolescence does NOT increase boys' risk of developing mental or physical health problems later in life, astonishing new research has claimed.

The findings fly in the face of previous studies which claimed cannabis use can alter teens' brain structure and ruin their memory.

Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Rutgers University tracked 408 males from adolescence into their mid-30s.

They expected to see teenage cannabis users face an increased risk of developing lung cancer, asthma, depression or psychotic symptoms including delusions and hallucinations.

This Cannabis Biotech Leader Helped Us Beat the Market by More Than 620%

Back on March 27, 2014, I recommended that Money Morning Members pick up what I felt was the very best play in the burgeoning cannabis biotech industry.

Today, the shares have done even better than I imagined, which is why I wanted to touch base with you again.

Right now, we're going to see how it's performed, but, even better, how to maximize the "free trade" it's about to give us.

And if you missed this stock last year – no worries. We'll start you now as it continues its run – a run that took off while "popular" medical marijuana stocks cratered.

Here's how we'll do it…

UK: PCC Ron Hogg will not sign petition to legalise cannabis as activists declare war on prohibition

DURHAM’S Police and Crime Commissioner has confirmed he will not be signing a petition to legalise cannabis as activists declare war on prohibition.

PCC Ron Hogg made international headlines last week after telling The Northern Echo that Durham Police would no longer proactively target cannabis users.

In the days following the contentious announcement, cannabis campaigners launched a petition asking the government to legalise the class-B drug.

The petition now has more than 180,000 signatures, surpassing the 100,000 needed to have the matter debated in Parliament.

As pro-legalisation activists across the world celebrate, the man at the centre of the heated debate firmly confirmed he will not be adding his name to the list.

Study Finds Alcohol Is The Gateway Drug, Not Marijuana

A new study in The Journal of School Health has found that alcohol is more likely to act as a gateway drug to substance abuse than marijuana.

The study proves that marijuana consumption is not an indicator as to whether a person is likely to move onto harder drugs or not.

Drug possession offences should not be used to assess police performance, research suggests

Study finds that officers are targeting low-level possession of cannabis rather than concentrating on more serious crime.

Drug possession should be removed from police performance measures, research claims.

This would allow officers to concentrate on crimes that "cause most harm" rather than targeting low-level possession of cannabis, according to the study.

Controversy over police approaches to cannabis possession erupted recently after some crime commissioners suggested that personal users will no longer be actively pursued by their forces.

Dr Michael Shiner, of the London School of Economics (LSE), analysed official crime statistics in relation to the reclassification of cannabis.

Men trafficked from Vietnam to grow Marijuana in UK failed by system, says top human rights lawyer

The UK announced last week it is working with Vietnam to stamp out the large number of trafficked people from the country coming to Britain.

Anti-human trafficking laws were tightened up on Friday 31 July, with the introduction of life sentences for the crime. But although prime minister David Cameron promised to help Vietnamese victims of forced labour, services are lacking for one crucial group: men, especially those enslaved to grow marijuana by criminal gangs.
