South Dakota House Approves Cannabidiol Measure

House lawmakers have passed a bill that would allow people in South Dakota with a prescription to use a non-intoxicating compound found in marijuana if it’s approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Members voted 54-13 Tuesday for the bill, which will be sent back to the Senate to consider changes made in the House.

The legislation would exclude cannabidiol, if it receives FDA approved, from the definition of marijuana in state law and classify it as a Schedule IV controlled substance that could be prescribed.

Republican Rep. Spencer Gosch, the bill’s main House sponsor, says it would allow cannabidiol to be available to children with seizure disorders.

Debate Over Recreational Heats Up In Connecticut

Supporters of legalizing pot in Connecticut argued Tuesday that the time has come to control and tax marijuana in the same way alcohol is regulated, warning that pot prohibition has failed.

Democratic and Republican lawmakers said at a morning news conference that legalization of recreational cannabis would end the illegal market in pot, halt the unnecessary arrest of thousands of people for possession, bring in tens of millions of dollars in new tax revenue and create new jobs.

But opponents of legalization staged their own competing news conference in advance of the major legislative hearing today on pro-pot bills.

Legal Weed Is Revitalizing Huntington, Oregon Thanks to Out-of-State Visitors

Idaho license plates line the parking lots of Huntington's pot shops.

Idaho Governor Butch Otter hates weed. Not only is his state one of the last without any sort of medical or recreational marijuana program whatsoever, Otter has even recently gone on record urging Trump to pursue a federal crackdown on states with legal marijuana laws. But despite the governor’s disapproval, Idaho’s residents are getting their hands on the marijuana they want elsewhere, and it’s bringing much needed financial relief to one struggling Oregon town.

California’s Looking for New Tax Revenue? Weed ’em and Reap

THE STONERS HAVE spoken: Recreational marijuana is now legal in eight states and Washington, DC. Thanks to the passage of Proposition 64, California is one of them, making it the country’s largest cannabis market—the state will start issuing sales licenses by January 1, 2018. Now, as long as the Trump administration doesn’t confiscate our stash, regulators, lawyers, and scientists have some big hazy questions to navigate, from how to keep digital tabs on up to 25,000 licensed growers to how to evaluate THC-related DUIs.

What Is the Future of Recreational Marijuana in Trump's America?

It’s a movement charging ahead — for now.

Legalizing recreational marijuana is currently a priority in more than a dozen states as polls show overwhelming support and lawmakers see a way to bring in hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue. So far, eight states have legalized recreational cannabis.

But in recent weeks, the Trump administration has alarmed some pot supporters by warning states that have legalized recreational marijuana — California, Colorado and Oregon, among them — that federal law enforcement agents could soon come after them.

High Times and Uncertainty as Marijuana Startup Eaze Looks to the Future

It’s a terrifying and exciting time to be running a tech startup with a business model that’s entirely dependent on the state’s legal marijuana industry.

California voters in November approved recreational use of marijuana, and on-demand cannabis delivery company Eaze expects that by expanding into that market, it can grow its customer base to more than five times its current size. At the same time, the burgeoning industry faces potential challenges from the new Republican administration and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has spoken out against legalization in the past.
