New HB 1060 Bill Would Allow Medical Marijuana in Washington Schools

Under parental supervision, students would be able to consume medical marijuana to stop seizures.

For children with epilepsy and other seizure inducing conditions, medical marijuana can be a lifesaver. Whether it means being able to sit through an entire class period, or in some cases just functioning in everyday life, there is no doubt that strains such as Charlotte’s Web and CBD oils are a huge help.

But for children around the country, even in states with legal medical or recreational cannabis, taking marijuana on school grounds has continued to cross the line of the law - until now.

Washington DC's Cannabis Scene Braces for the Trump Era

It’s a cold January night and I’m trying to find a cannabis speakeasy in the nation’s capital. It isn’t easy. I’m in the Adams Morgan neighborhood, just north of U Street. I’ve been given an address, but from the outside it looks like an Indian or Thai restaurant. This must be the place. I descend a set of steps to an underground entrance and walk into a dark and hazy room.

A Chicago Lawyer's Journey from Mortgages to Medical Marijuana

It turns out a law degree is just as helpful in launching a medical marijuana business as it is dealing with mortgages.

Charlie Bachtell was general counsel at Chicago-based mortgage company Guaranteed Rate when the lawyer in him became captivated by Illinois' medical marijuana law. He left mortgage banking and today the 38-year-old is the CEO and co-founder of medical marijuana company Cresco Labs.

As he stood among the drying plants in Cresco's Joliet growing facility, Bachtell talked with the Tribune about why he switched careers and what it's like combating the stigma surrounding the industry. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Cannabis Testing in the Legalization Era

Attitudes towards cannabis have shifted dramatically over the last two decades, and this has been reflected in recent changes to the law in many countries around the world. Just this November, an additional four US states voted to make recreational cannabis use legal, bringing the total to eight, (plus Washington DC). And over half of US states have legalized medicinal cannabis use.

But, given that cannabis was previously a prohibited drug in almost every country, regulators face major challenges in getting to grips with what is now a flourishing legal cannabis industry. And in the USA, with individual states making their own laws while the drug remains illegal at the federal level, the situation is further complicated.

California's Pot Czar on Upcoming Marijuana Regulation: 'We Will Not Fail'

In a coming together that once seemed highly unlikely, California state regulators Wednesday greeted a hotel ballroom filled with marijuana growers, promising that a licensing program to bring thousands of pot producers out of the shadows will be operational in the state by Jan. 1, 2018.

It was hard to ignore the landmark nature of the informal meeting between California officials – including the head of the new marijuana regulations bureau – and members of the California Growers Association, a 2-year-old trade group representing marijuana farmers.

Utah Medical Association Says There Is No Such Thing as Medical Marijuana

The Utah Medical Association not only wants to stop marijuana from becoming legal for medical use in Utah, it wants reporters to stop using the term "medical marijuana."

But Cristine Steinquist has a brain tumor and says marijuana helps.

"It helps the nausea and the pain," she said.

But according to doctors, anecdotal stories do not make something medical.

Major Buzz Kill for U.S. Marijuana Producers as Prices Plunge on Rising Supply

The increasing supply of legal marijuana is turning into a major buzz kill for growers as prices plunge — and an opportunity for companies that can help cut production costs.

Prices are tumbling as formerly illicit cultivators emerge from the shadows to invest millions of dollars in massive pot factories. In Colorado, the average price sought by wholesalers has fallen 48 per cent to about US$1,300 a pound since legal sales to all adults started in January 2014, according to Cannabase, operator of the state’s largest market. Supply is surging as growers expand and install the latest agricultural technology.

Can Marijuana Treat MS Symptoms? It's Hard for Researchers to Find Out

An estimated 400,000 Americans are currently living with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune cells attack a fatty substance called myelin in the nerves. Common symptoms are gait and balance disorders, cognitive dysfunction, fatigue, pain and muscle spasticity.

Colorado has the highest proportion of people living with MS in the United States. It is estimated that one in 550 people living in the state has MS, compared to one in 750 nationally. The reason for this is unknown, but could be related to several factors, such as vitamin D deficiency or environment.
