3 major biotech updates every investor should know

Although the biotech sector of the cannabis industry offers investors great opportunity and is comprised of some of the most mature public companies, we expect it to remain under pressure following the Nasdaq’s plunge on Friday.

On Friday, the Nasdaq hit a record high before it ended the day down 1.8% and the tech sector is poised to tumble even further today.

Arkansas: Marijuana could soon be legally grown, sold along Missouri border

Medical marijuana dispensaries and growing farms could begin popping up along Missouri's southern border.

Officials with the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission last week finalized details and applications for prospective growers and vendors will become available to the public on June 20.

Under Arkansas law, there can be five cultivation sites statewide; for dispensaries, the state is divided into eight zones that each can have at least four dispensaries, for a total of 32 statewide.

Northwest Arkansas — Benton, Washington, Carroll and Madison counties — is defined as one zone.

Each of those four counties voted to approve medical marijuana in November, as did the state overall, by a vote of 53 percent to 46 percent.

Medical marijuana in Nevada set framework for recreational sales

In the coming weeks, recreational marijuana retail sales are set to begin in Nevada. But how will it affect existing medical marijuana patients?

Medical marijuana dispensaries opened across Nevada in 2015. The framework for the medical program is providing a "launching pad" for recreational sales, said Andrew Jolley, owner of The+Source dispensary and president of the Nevada Dispensary Association.

"The only dispensaries who will be able to sell recreationally are existing medical dispensaries," he said. "So we are very much building upon the regulated framework that has worked very well in Nevada when we transition into adult use."

Trump and Sessions break up – Good for cannabis?

For marijuana enthusiasts, Sessions is the most hated man in the Trump camp. But could the tides be turning in their favor?

Recent leaks from within the White House, as well as mainstream reporting, reveal tension levels between Trump and Sessions are at an all-time high. While the tension itself does not have anything to do with marijuana, it could certainly have positive implications for our favorite plant.

We have all seen the ramifications for disappointing the Donald. Chris Christie, Michael Flynn, Steve Bannon, and most recently FBI Director Comey have all suffered catastrophically once they have crossed President Trump.

High court's order allows medical marijuana licensing to proceed for now

Maryland's medical marijuana commission can continue to issue licenses for companies to grow the drug.

Maryland's highest court denied a motion Friday to continue a temporary restraining order that blocked the commission from issuing licenses for about a week, due to a lawsuit against the commission. The court also agreed to hear arguments from finalists to be licensed who contend they should have been allowed to intervene in the lawsuit. The Court of Appeals set a July 27 hearing date.

Marijuana: safer than opioids?

Weed, pot, reefer, grass, Mary Jane, hash, herb – whatever you call it, marijuana historically has had a bad reputation as an illegal street drug. Marijuana elicits images of high school kids hiding in bathrooms, college parties filled with smoky air and the gateway drug to harder addictions.

But in the midst of an opioid epidemic in the Blue Water Area, some advocates argue that using marijuana to treat chronic pain is a safer, less addictive alternative to narcotics.

Another obstacle hits Arizona study on whether marijuana helps veterans with PTSD

Two major research universities have cut ties with a Valley doctor’s efforts to answer this question: Does smoking marijuana help veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder?

Dr. Sue Sisley, who was fired by the University of Arizona in 2013 after her study was underway, learned in March that Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University has dropped plans to partner on the first-ever study of cannabis for veterans.

Beyond Sisley losing a prestigious research partner, the Johns Hopkins departure means study backers won't have access to Baltimore-area veterans and must recruit study participants from Arizona.

Cannabis used effectively to fight statewide opioid crisis

The treatment center Blue Door Therapeutics is combating the opioid epidemic with cannabis pills and patches in response to painkillers' often agonizing withdrawal symptoms. According to doctors at the Scottsdale, Arizona facility, a chemical in marijuana with "anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties" can "help stabilize the patient's underlying condition," reported ABC15.
