Edibles are gobbling up California's marijuana market

Adding cannabis to everything from iced coffee to breath mints, startups are jockeying for a bite of California’s growing marijuana edibles market as the state gears up to allow recreational pot sales.

The industry that barely existed 10 years ago — apart from a few bakers making pot brownies in their home kitchens — now shows no sign of slowing down.

“There’s a brand boom going on right now, particularly in preparation for adult use legalization here,” said Troy Dayton, CEO of The Arcview Group, a research and investment services firm focusing on marijuana businesses. “Not all of them are going to do well, but there’s just so many different types of edibles hitting different market segments.”

Employers have ‘grave concerns’ over ability to detect, enforce marijuana in workplace: lawyers

A number of employers have expressed “grave concerns” about potential spillover effects of legal marijuana in the workplace, a labour lawyer said at a panel for employers on cannabis use Wednesday.

“There are a lot of employers across the country who are saying this is going to be a groundswell of change in the way employees conduct themselves in the workplace,” Darryl Hiscocks of Torys LLP advised a room of employers curious about the impact of marijuana legalization expected a year from now.

He believes murkiness over marijuana use in the workplace will become a legal battleground.

Will The DOJ's New Marijuana Task Force Kill Legal Weed?

One of the primary reasons there has not been much talk, as of late, about a crackdown on statewide marijuana legalization is U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is still waiting for a marijuana task force to submit a review of federal marijuana policy.

Although there is not much known about the inner workings of this so-called marijuana subcommittee, the group is expected to deliver its recommendations to Sessions by the end of next month.

How Sophisticated Branding Aims to Make You Rethink Cannabis

As the marijuana industry begins to mature, purveyors recognize the need to separate themselves with distinct branding. The hand-painted signs, bad puns, and Rastafarian flags that once defined the industry are giving way to sophisticated design that abandons aging stoners in favor of more upscale clientele.

Before marijuana was legalized, the plant’s design aesthetic was somewhere between the tie-dyed patterns of the Grateful Dead, the Rastafarian color palette of Bob Marley, and the Jamaican flag. But that’s starting to change.

Massachusetts Tobacco Wholesalers Want in on Recreational Marijuana

Plenty of companies are angling to get in on the coming legalized pot bonanza. Some, however, are lobbying the state to carve off a piece just for them: cigarette wholesalers.

The companies that track, deliver, and tax all the cigarettes sold in Massachusetts are seeking a similar monopoly on recreational marijuana when sales begin in 2018. They’ve asked state officials to require marijuana producers to sell all their pot products through them — just as most alcohol has to pass through a wholesaler on its way to bars and package stores.
