Women 'nearly twice as likely to see regular cannabis use as risky'

earchers at Columbia University and Johns Hopkins University have identified nonwhite, low-income women aged over 50 as most likely to perceive regularly using cannabis as a risky activity, with women nearly twice as likely to perceive a risk compared with men.

Public perceptions of cannabis use appear to be changing as more and more states move to legalize the use of the drug for medical purposes.

Results from the study, published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence, were obtained through analysis of data from the 2002-12 survey years of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Amid controversy, D.C. marijuana law goes into effect

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Thursday at midnight, for the first time in his life, Allen St. Pierre got legally stoned.

While St. Pierre, executive director of NORML, a national advocacy group for the legalization of marijuana, said he possessed illegal marijuana for his entire adult life, he celebrated when Initiative 71, Washington, D.C.’s ballot measure to legalize marijuana went into effect by not only lighting up, but also by planting his own cannabis seeds.

“In D.C., it was clear this initiative was going to pass,” St. Pierre said, referring to last November’s referendum when marijuana legalization was approved with 70 percent of the vote. “We did volunteer call outs in the two weeks leading up to the vote, but there was no cajoling necessary to get it to pass.”

Washington D.C. residents are doomed to a grim future of drug addiction, the Russian Health Ministry's top drugs specialist warned Thursday in a scathing commentary on the district's recent legalization of marijuana.

"When the authorities take their cue from the sinister interests of the population, what happens is everyone becomes a drug addict," Yevgeny Bryun, the ministry's chief drugs specialist, was cited as saying Thursday by Interfax news agency.

A law legalizing recreational marijuana use took effect in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. In accordance with the new law, Washington residents over 21 years of age will be allowed to smoke marijuana in their own homes, but not in public places.

Mayor says District of Columbia to go ahead with pot legalization

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said on Wednesday the District of Columbia would move forward as planned with marijuana legalization, despite objections from members of the U.S. Congress.

"We believe that we're on very strong legal ground," Bowser said. Voters in the U.S. capital overwhelmingly decided last year to make marijuana legal for recreational use. But Republican lawmakers said that was contrary to the will of Congress, which has responsibility for the District of Columbia.
