Craft cannabis has arrived in Alberta, and these are not your hippy home-growers

Kieley Beaudry is relatively new to micro-cannabis, but so is the rest of Alberta.

Beaudry is the founder of Parkland Flower Inc., a micro-cultivation facility currently under construction in Parkland County west of Edmonton. She is also the president of the fledgling Alberta Cannabis Micro License Association (ACMLA).

After incorporating last November, Parkland Flower’s wholesaling licence is expected to be approved by Health Canada this month. The company also has plans to apply for a processing licence down the line.

With that, and licences for the ACMLA coming in, it’s a busy time for Beaudry on the eve of the second wave of legalization.

All the new products available on the one year anniversary of cannabis legalization

Canada became the second country in the world to legalize recreational cannabis in October 2018. This year, besides the first anniversary of the historic day, Canadians will also be treated to a new set of approved products.

The new products will become permissible for sale as of October 17, 2019, though Health Canada must be notified 60-days before any product can be sold and therefore nothing will be available until after that cut off. The 60-day rule is not a time limit, and products may not be available until after the waiting period is over.

This means the earliest Canadians can expect to see the new wave of cannabis products is mid-December.

What the vaping crisis teaches businesses about the importance of supply chains

How crucial are supply-chain protections? The answer could be traced to the ongoing vaping crisis.

The current public-health emergency has killed at least a dozen people and has hospitalized hundreds more. Aside from the human cost, the tragedy has also raised questions about many aspects of vaping, including its meteoric rise in popularity with young people, its lack of regulatory oversight, and its profitable existence in illicit markets.

More importantly, for any business in any industry, this crisis also highlights the need for ensuring the integrity of supply chains.

Innovation in edibles

From chocolates to powder mixes, cannabis retailers will be showcasing a ton of innovation in edibles.

There are a few things you should know before edibles arrive on retail shelves.

First, edibles are just another cannabis product that will become legal under the Cannabis Act. That means you should be prepared for the products coming with a child-proof locking mechanism and the familiar standardized THC logo.

Second, be aware that the rollout will take time. The earliest that edibles can arrive on shelves is mid-December 2019, and even then we will see only a limited selection until 2020 when the selection will start ramping up.

How CBD keeps THC in check

Many people who use cannabis do it for the euphoric effects caused by the main psychoactive ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol, often called THC. But THC can also cause unpleasant side effects like paranoia, dissociative thoughts, impaired memory or even psychotic episodes. As cannabis has become more potent, it is becoming more likely that some users will experience those effects. But another compound present in the plant, the non-psychoactive cannabidiol, actually works against THC and can block those negative effects.
