Is hemp the future of sustainable farming in Perth County

When Stratford native Danyka Dunseith decided to leave her public relations job in Toronto two years ago to farm hemp on her grandmother’s farm northeast of Stratford, some called her crazy.

But for Dunseith, the move was calculated. Though she didn’t have much in the way of practical farming experience, she gained insight into the burgeoning cannabis and hemp industries after she was hired to help promote cannabidiol (CBD) products, a PR contract that proved to be her last.

After convincing her grandmother to end an agreement with the company that had been renting her 30-hectare (75-acre) farm, Dunseith approached her with a well-researched business plan to produce hemp on the family farm.

What sewage screening suggests about cannabis use and the black market in Canada

When it comes to cannabis, the proof is in the peeing.

Canada’s national statistics agency has been collecting and testing municipal wastewater samples from five cities for traces of cannabis to gauge actual usage of the now legal drug. The results are surprising: In some cases they contradict other Statistics Canada data on pot use, while shedding light on the potential size of the black market.

A quick and easy guide to getting started with growing cannabis indoors

Planting Seeds

We all want to see big frosty buds but, as with everything else in the plant world, you have to start at the beginning—by germinating the seeds. Although they should pop open within a couple of days, be patient—it can take up to 7 days for a seedling to emerge from the surface of your growing medium.

Things to Consider: Seedlings require warm and wet conditions to thrive. If you think of typical spring weather, this will give you a great idea of how warm and moist the environment should be.

'You don't have to be a super-skilled hacker': Challenges abound to secure online cannabis sales in Alberta

As cannabis sales in Alberta top the country, a Calgary professor says online sales could pose new challenges for countering fraudulent IDs and securing consumer data.

Currently, only Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis is permitted to sell cannabis online in Alberta.

But as the private sector plans to enter the market, verifying a customer’s identity online becomes a lot more difficult, said Thomas Keenan, a professor focused on data and cyber security in the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.

Hemp, you can’t smoke it, but you can use it to build green houses

The hemp fields sprouting in a part of Canada best known for its giant oil patch show how climate change is disrupting the construction industry.

Six years after setting up shop in the shadow of Calgary’s tar sands, Mac Radford says he cannot satisfy all the orders from builders for Earth-friendly materials that help them limit their carbon footprints. His company, Just BioFiber Structural Solutions, is the vanguard of businesses using hemp — the boring cousin of marijuana devoid of psychoactive content — to mitigate the greenhouse gases behind global warming.

Cannabis companies focusing heavily on THC-gummies for future revenue

While cannabis edibles are a hot topic in Canada these days, there are supposed to be strict regulations in place to dissuade youngsters from trying them. But those rules don’t necessarily apply south of the border.

Having legalized cannabis for recreational purposes last year, the final piece of the puzzle is the delicate area of THC edibles, gummies in particular. While such edibles will officially become legal in Canada on October 17th, they cannot be “appealing to young persons.” The finer details of the regulations are yet to be announced by Health Canada.

Number of pets exposed to cannabis on rise: Vet association

New data suggest pet poisonings from cannabis are on the rise, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association says.

The Pet Poison Helpline, a U.S.-based animal poison control centre that also serves Canadian pet owners and veterinarians, tracked 179 cases of pets being exposed to cannabis in Canada between the start of 2016 and June 30, 2019.

More than 90 per cent of those cases involved dogs, and no fatalities were recorded.

"Sixty-four instances were reported throughout 2018, whereas there were 54 reports during the first seven months of 2019 — suggesting 2019 will show a significant increase from the previous year," the CVMA said Thursday in a news release, noting not all cannabis exposures involving pets is reported.
