CannTrust to sell legal pot again as it looks to recover from illicit production scandal

The head of CannTrust Holdings Inc. said the past year has been a "long slog" to begin selling cannabis products in the Canadian recreational market, after federal regulators suspended the company's licences for growing pot in unlicensed rooms.

CannTrust Chief Executive Officer Greg Guyatt said in an interview that the company will re-introduce its brands to several provinces this month, following an 18-month period in which the company was embroiled in a regulatory scandal that ultimately led to it seeking creditor protection earlier this year.

"It's been a long slog to get to this point, focused on remediation and compliance," Guyatt said. "It's been many long hours and a massive amount of effort from everybody."

8 Celebrities Cashing In On Cannabis

As cannabis becomes a go-to source for a myriad of health benefits, celebrity endorsements are normalizing the herb more than ever.

Legally speaking, cannabis has slowly been making progress, shifting our cultural perspective so much so that it seems like celebrities openly embracing the drug should be the norm. It isn’t. Despite the fact that cannabis is more mainstream than ever, there are still people in the world who have trouble understanding it, which makes endorsing a product a sticky situation for any celebrity worried about ruining their image.

Weed at the bar? The tourism industry wants Ontario pot venues open by spring

While Ontario’s longest patio season is serving its last calls under well-used heat lamps, industry groups representing the hard-hit restaurant, tourism, and live events sectors are calling on the province to advance talks on selling and consuming cannabis inside public venues. Beth Potter, president and CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO), wants new pot regulations for lounges, cafes, festivals and concerts established by the spring.

Manitoba plans to hire youth to help catch retailers selling cannabis, alcohol to minors

The Manitoba government plans to stop alcohol and cannabis retailers from selling to minors by hiring young people for undercover operations.

Bill 60 was introduced in early November, but details were only released publicly on Thursday. It would allow minors hired by the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba to attempt to purchase regulated products. These sting operations would try to catch places where underage sales are happening.

Justice Minister Cliff Cullen said the LGCA is limited in its enforcement activities, because it must have an inspector observe sales to a minor to identify a breach.

"The only way to catch licensees who sell to minors or young people is to observe them doing so," Cullen said in a statement to CBC News.

Through cannabis tourism, P.E.I. has an opportunity to grow

If you’ve been following the political coverage in the Maritimes recently, you’d have seen considerable coverage of the challenges faced by the tourism industry both within the region and, more specifically, here on Prince Edward Island.

Problems in the tourism industry aren’t unique to P.E.I. nor the Maritimes. Having said that, the outsized impact of this tourism turbulence on the local economy differentiates the sector’s importance to our province’s bottom line compared to the experience of other jurisdictions.

Last week, we saw the Government of Nova Scotia announce commercial property tax forgiveness for tourism operators, and the Official Opposition leader in P.E.I. press the government for its own immediate plans to support the sector in these trying times.

Marijuana investors have experienced a whirlwind ride over the last 24 months. In October 2018, Canada legalized pot for recreational use which resulted in a massive bull run as investors were overly optimistic about this development. However, as with any nascent industry, marijuana producers also faced a number of teething issues.

The Canadian pot producers have been grappling with competition from a thriving black market and the slow rollout of retail stores in major provinces. This in turn led to lower than expected demand and rising inventory levels.
