A Kirkland Lake licensed cannabis grower is under new ownership.

48North Cannabis announced Aug 26 that it has obtained the final court order approving its sale to Ottawa-based HEXO, one of the largest licensed cannabis companies in Canada, in a previously announced $50-million deal.

48North shareholders approved the transaction on Aug. 17.

HEXO will acquire all of 48North’s issued and outstanding common shares by way of a plan of arrangement first announced on May 17.

The Vancouver-based company's strategy is two-pronged - to supply the Canadian recreational market with high-potency flower and while also serving the European medical cannabis market.

However, one could argue that cannabis stocks were the original meme stocks. These companies garnered a tremendous amount of attention in previous years. Indeed, as Canada legalized recreational cannabis use, the expectation was that a Biden government would follow.

However, we haven’t seen anything concrete play out yet south of the border. Accordingly, investor interest has seemingly shifted to other high-growth sectors today.

A retail cannabis corporation, High Tide, has acquired five retail cannabis locations in Regina. The locations include Prince of Wales Drive, Victoria Avenue, Eastgate Drive and Albert Street.

All five locations are expected to be operational by the end of 2021. 

The company's founder, president and CEO, Raj Grover, says the stores will run under the name Canna Cabana.

Grover also says acquiring stores in Regina came with some challenges but was worth the investment.
