Watch this short doc on the benefits of medical marijuana

"Weed is way more than just weed," says Tristan Williams, the subject of a new short doc on the 'undeniable benefits' of medicinal marijuana by Abandoned Spirt House Films, founded in Halifax a few years ago by King's College grads Roland Eksteins and Nicolas Bergeron.

Both Eksteins and Bergeron are currently videographers in residence at The Banff Centre in Alberta, but often collaborate on independent work, including A Different Light.

MINNEAPOLIS– Keith Stroup, founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML, noted in an Oct. 30 article for Alternet that a majority of Americans support marijuana legalization. Quoting a recent Gallup poll, he reported:

“Among those poll respondents age 18 to 34, 71 percent endorse legalization. Among respondents age 35 to 49 years of age, 64 percent support legalizing marijuana. Among those age 65 and up, support fell to 35 percent, but this too reflected a sharp increase in support.”

Regulated cannabis market could be 'right approach' for Warrington, says UK Lib Dem leader

THE town's Liberal Democrat leader believes introducing a regulated cannabis market could be the 'right approach' to combat illegal production of the drug in Warrington.

The party set up an independent panel of experts to establish how a legalised market for cannabis could work in the UK.

MPs debated legalising the production, sale and use of cannabis in Parliament last month following a petition which gained more than 221,000 signatures but ministers said they had no plans to alter the laws.

Liberal Democrat health spokesman Normal Lamb wants the panel to look at at evidence from Colorado, Washington State and Uruguay, where cannabis has been legalised, and to make recommendations for the party to consider in the spring.

Police shatter credibility on marijuana extract

It was a single Tweet, one some say has shattered police credibility when it comes to marijuana.

.@VPDGangUnit Shatter is a marijuana extract. Show me a case where someone has actually OD'd from this? You can't. pic.twitter.com/rlGtKrGIml

While well-intentioned, our tweets about #Shatter weren’t accurate & have been deleted. Our apologies. We will do better in future.

Marijuana possession arrests on rise in NJ

TRENTON - Nearly double the number of people were arrested for marijuana possession in a year in New Jersey compared to 20 years ago, according to the latest figures available.

The change runs counter to the nationwide trend as public acceptance of marijuana use grows in the United States, leading generally to a decline in arrests.

Udi Ofer, executive director of New Jersey’ ACLU chapter, said he’s especially concerned by the numbers because studies show African-Americans are charged with simple possession three times as much as whites despite both groups having the same usage rates for the drug.

Marijuana arrests drop 40% this year as NYPD mellows out

Cops are following through on Mayor de Blasio’s pledge to stop locking people up for carrying small amounts of pot.

Police cuffed 18,120 stoners through Oct. 20 — a 40 percent plummet from the 29,906 pot busts in the same period last year, state Division of Criminal Justice records show.

At the same time, tickets for pot violations have surged. Cops handed out 13,081 low-level pot summonses through the end of September — and are on pace for more than 16,000 tickets. The NYPD issued 13,378 pot tickets for all of last year, and 13,316 tickets in 2013, records show.

Mexico inches toward legalizing marijuana

The United States has a very sensitive relationship with Mexico pertaining to illegal drugs.

It is constantly claiming that Mexico has been lax in assisting in the interdiction of illegal drugs that are produced or staged in Mexico and shipped to destinations within the U.S. American policymakers and would-be presidential candidates point to the corruption within the Mexican government that is fueled by the billions in revenues of illegal drugs that Mexico’s cartels send to the U.S.

Mexico always responds with the obvious: There would be no illegal drug problem between the two countries if U.S. drug users were not creating this lucrative market.
