Proponents for medical marijuana believe it could soon be legal in South Carolina. Bills introduced in the State House of Representatives and the State Senate last session are currently in subcommittee and are up for discussion next session. 

An Upstate woman is pushing hard for the legislation to pass which would legalize the entirety of the marijuana plant, not just the cannibidiol oil, which was legalized last year. 

Emily McSherry suffers from a genetic blood disorder which causes her seizures. She said she tried several prescription medicines to control the seizures, but side effects included depression and suicidal thoughts. She said those severely disrupted her ability to parent and function properly. 

A St. Paul man was charged Tuesday in what authorities characterized as a “large-scale” marijuana distribution ring between California and Minnesota, involving several suspects and more than $1 million.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation, declined to comment Tuesday or say whether more charges were expected.

But complaints against two men, along with several search warrant affidavits, offer a glimpse of the stealth operation. “This operation has seen thousands of one-pound packaged marijuana baggies being driven across country from California to Minnesota in rental cars,” said an affidavit filed Tuesday. “The investigation is being reviewed by the United States Attorney’s Office, as the network is large and covers multiple states.”

The House rejected the idea by a razor-thin margin in April, but there's a chance it will slip into compromise legislation.

But he said he was willing to listen to other opinions.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said Monday he opposes any eventual legalization of marijuana, five days after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of four people who wanted to grow pot for personal use.

Pena Nieto said in a speech that "for me it would not be desirable, I am not in favor of an eventual legalization of marijuana," but said he was willing to listen to other opinions.

The president said he welcomed a debate on the question, and invited doctors, sociologists and other academics to contribute, but said it "should in no way represent an opening for the consumption of much more dangerous drugs."

Fearing a federal raid, a South Dakota Native American tribe is burning its marijuana crop, which it had planned to sell in a resort on its land.

The "marijuana resort" would have been the first of its kind, but concerns that the stockpile could be confiscated led tribe leaders to incinerate it.

The tribe says it wants to show cooperation with federal officials for future negotiations.

Whether the tribe can sell marijuana to non-Indians has come under question.

Representatives for the US Department of Justice did not tell Santee Sioux tribe leaders a raid was imminent, but the government reserves a right to conduct a raid at any time and the tribe would risk one if all the concerns about the resort were not addressed.

A senator from President Enrique Pena Nieto's governing party introduced a bill Tuesday that would allow patients easier access to cannabis-based medicines, a week after a ruling by Mexico's Supreme Court that cracked open a door to recreational marijuana use.

The measure does not propose wholesale legalization of medical marijuana but rather seeks to permit the importation of cannabis and derivatives for medicinal purposes. Domestic pot production would still be prohibited.

Beginning in 2017, high school graduates in a Colorado county will be able to apply for a college scholarship funded by a marijuana tax.

Voters in Pueblo County approved a measure that would incrementally increase taxes on marijuana by 5 percent over the next five years in order to fund college scholarships and other community improvement projects. Funding education via a tax on a recreational drug is something Time called “a concept that probably would have been laughed off as a total joke just a few years ago.”

County officials believe this measure is the first of its nature and are hopeful that this program will allow more families in their community send their children to school.
