Pressure in Scotland to adopt Irish 'radical shift' to decriminalisation of drugs

Scotland must start the debate on decriminalising drugs, say MSPs, government advisers and campaigners

SCOTLAND must start the debate on decriminalising drugs, campaigners, MSPs and former government advisers have said.

The call follows an announcement by the Irish government that it plans a “radical culture shift” which will see possession of drugs decriminalised in ordered to focus on offering helping to addicts and users rather than punishing them with criminal convictions and prison.

As the call came, the Scottish Government also told the Sunday Herald that it was reaffirming its wish for Holyrood to take responsibility over drug laws, which are currently reserved to Westminster.

SciCheck: DEA chief wrong on medical marijuana

The acting head of the Drug Enforcement Administration claimed that smoking marijuana has “never been shown to be safe or effective as a medicine.” That’s false: though information is limited on the topic, several studies have found smoked marijuana has medical benefits and mostly mild side effects.

As many as seven million possible customers for legal weed in Canada as support hits new heights: Poll

A legal marijuana industry in Canada would have between 6- and 7-million potential customers, an exclusive new poll has found — or about a third of the country’s adults.

A new Forum Research survey of 1,256 adults found 18 per cent of respondents had already used pot in the past year and another 13 per cent would if it were legal, for a combined 31 per cent of the adult population older than 18.

“The size of the market… should be good news for the potential industry players waiting to open shop here,” said Forum Research President Lorne Bozinoff in a release.

Missouri could decide medical marijuana issue in 2016

ST. LOUIS • Missouri’s 2016 ballot could be filled with weed.

Competing proposals, bolstered by growing national support, are seeking to put medical marijuana legalization on the statewide ballot. If approved, Missouri would join 23 other states that have done so.

Proponents have an uphill battle. First they need to collect 168,000 valid signatures from at least six of the state’s nine congressional districts. Then they need to win approval from the state’s conservative-leaning voters. Only a handful of states that have legalized medical marijuana are in the Midwest (Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan). And there’s not one in the South, the region with which Missouri has been more politically aligned over the past decade.

Hillary Clinton’s marijuana policy could lead to regulation of the industry

Former secretary of state wants Schedule II classification for marijuana

Hillary Clinton’s stance on marijuana legalization could cost the budding industry.

The former secretary of state and the front-runner in the Democratic presidential race told a town hall in South Carolina on Saturday that she supports reclassifying cannabis from a Schedule I to a Schedule II substance. Schedule I drugs have high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, while a Schedule II classification means a drug has a high potential for abuse, but also an accepted medical use, like morphine and cocaine.

Kelly Anderson, Saskatoon Man, Claims Pot Shop Closure Is Discriminatory

SASKATOON -- A man has launched a complaint with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission over a police raid on a Saskatoon medical marijuana dispensary.

Kelly Anderson took the action Friday after police arrested four people at the Saskatchewan Compassion Club on Oct. 29, including owner Mark Hauk.

The complaint names Mayor Don Atchison and police chief Clive Weighill.

Anderson says the unlicensed club was the only place he felt safe purchasing marijuana to treat his chronic pain caused by a weakening of one knee and surgery on the other.

He says the closure of the dispensary denies him access to his medicine and is therefore discriminating against his condition.

Federal Court warns DEA about interfering with Medical Cannabis Providers

For over almost a year now the DEA and the DOJ were banned from using federal funds to go after legitimate marijuana businesses in states that have a legal framework in place. While the bill that banned the DEA from doing this action was pretty clear in terms of their limitations, the DEA felt that it had some “wiggle room” to break thus said law and still went after cannabis dispensaries and providers claiming that the bill merely “protected States and not the individuals or businesses within the State”.

Fortunately, a Federal Judge made it clear to the DOJ that interfering with State run Medical Marijuana programs, whether the actual state or the legal players within the program, is illegal!
