Judge warns teen about long-term marijuana use

KITCHENER — A judge gave a young Kitchener pot smoker a small lecture on Friday while alluding to the Liberal promise to legalize marijuana.

Justice Colin Westman told Goran Jazic, 19, that marijuana has medicinal value but, similar to alcohol, it can have a "negative impact," especially with long-term use.

Jazic, who attended Wilfrid Laurier University for a year, is intelligent, the judge said.

"Don't compromise it with this stuff," Westman told him. "To succeed in this world, you have got to have all your wits about you."

Westman noted the Liberal government will likely legalize marijuana soon.

Isle of Mann Health Minister won't support decriminalisation of cannabis

Why do we need to decriminalise cannabis to recognise its medicinal qualities?

That’s the question posed by the Health and Social Care Minister who’s responded after the issue sparked a debate in the House of Keys.

Qualified chemist, and Speaker of the House, Steve Rodan agrees – he says self-medicating is unwise, but it makes sense to extract benefit from the drug.

Drugs with cannabinoid ingredients are already available on prescription – Howard Quayle says his stance is clear:

Canadian federal medical marijuana program has improved: CanniMed

Supporters of a Saskatoon marijuana dispensary that was raided continue to call the crack-down an injustice. A handful of supports of the Saskatchewan Compassion Club picketed Wednesday in front of Saskatoon city hall.

Last week, the club was raided by police. The owner, Mark Hauk, and three others were arrested and face trafficking charges.

Supporters said the federally-regulated program is archaic and doesn’t have as many options as compassion clubs.

However, not everyone shares that view.

Brent Zettl, the CEO of CanniMed – a medical marijuana producer in Saskatoon, said the government’s program has improved over the years, specifically when it comes to efficiency.

UK: Drug seizures 'fall to lowest level in almost a decade'

Annual drug seizures across England and Wales have fallen dramatically to the lowest number in almost a decade, official figures show.

There were 167,059 seizures by police and Border Force staff across the two countries in 2014/2015, down from 194,346 in 2013/14.

The 14% drop reflects the largest year-on-year fall since 2006/07, when comparable records began.

Drug offences also fell by 14% in 2014/15 against the previous year, the Home Office figures reveal.

Policing Minister Mike Penning said drugs seizures by Border Force officials had gone up by 71% since 2011/12, stopping dangerous drugs from entering the UK and harming communities.
