For Michelle, driving to the closest provincially regulated cannabis store isn’t worth the gas money. Her closest option is nearly 70 kilometres from her home in Lawrencetown, N.S., a village of 668 people. 

“We started growing just because of where we’re situated,” said Michelle, who asked to keep her last name private. “It’s not convenient to go to the NSLC, and I found the quality just wasn’t there for what you’re paying.” Before that, she bought from a “backyard dealer” who also grew his own. 

A new report from Statistics Canada adds to a growing body of evidence that marijuana legalization dissuades adolescent use.

It would be wrong to state that marijuana legalization causes a drop in teenage use, due to a lack of rigorous scientific studies on the matter. A coloration is developing, however. According to a new report from Statistics Canada, teenage use of cannabis has declined following adult-use legalization in the country.

Legalization seems to have put a damper on teens’ enthusiasm for cannabis consumption, perhaps indicating yet again that the best way to discourage teens from doing something is to get their parents into it.

While cannabis use has increased in almost all age demographics across Canada since federal legalization came into force in October 2018, teenagers saw consumption decline, according to new numbers released by Statistics Canada.

The trend of infusing various beverages continues to grow, but to know if you want to sell these types of products in your shop, you first need to understand the trends and why they appeal to consumers.

For the last few years, consumers have been gravitating towards edibles. This is true for both the THC and CBD markets, and it applies to all age ranges. It also includes more than just food, with CBD beverages making up for a large part of the market demand.

Prices of hundreds of cannabis products at Ontario’s provincially owned online retail store have decreased dramatically since legalization, a result of rising cannabis supply and a proliferation of product offerings from producers.

“To date, more than 200 product price decreases have been made on dried cannabis, pre-rolls, oils and capsules as well as accessories,” the Ontario Cannabis Store revealed in a statement this week.

According to the OCS, more than 160 price drops came in the dried flower category and approximately 40 in the extract category, which includes products such as cannabis oils and gel capsules

Cannabidiol or CBD products have hit shelves in droves since Congress made hemp legal with the 2018 Farm Bill. Derived from the hemp plant, advocates herald CBD as a potentially strong treatment for issues such as inflammation and pain management.

But what if there was a cannabinoid that did the job even better?

That’s the claim, by some, for cannabigerol or CBG. According to New Jersey.com, CBG has been called “a better anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety treatment than CBD or marijuana,” partly because it’s less likely to make the user groggy or paranoid.

While the majority of consumers report feeling “safe” using vaping products, Google searches for “quit vaping” dramatically spiked at height of EVALI outbreak.

Though new cases continue to be reported, the outbreak of E-cigarette or Vaping product use Associated Lung Injury (EVALI) has steadily declined since initial reports surfaced last July. As of February 4, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports there have been 2,758 hospitalized cases of EVALI resulting in 64 deaths. Cases were found in all 50 states, but its spread peaked in September of last year.

This is set to be an exciting year for the Canadian cannabis industry, but there are still several hurdles the fledgling industry must overcome if it is to live up to pre-legalization hype.

According to data from Brightfield Group’s January 2020 Canadian Cannabis report, one-third of Canadian cannabis consumers were unsure which brands they were purchasing and 50% didn’t know what dosage they preferred in 2019.

The survey data illuminates two problems the government, licensed cannabis producers, sellers, and consumers have experienced since legalization.

“Regulations were so extensive that few brands or products were able to gain traction among customers,” the report states.
