Alberta delays sales of cannabis vapes, angering producers and retailers

The province has indefinitely postponed the legal sales of cannabis vapes, a move that’s ignited anger among producers and retailers.

With the second phase of cannabis legalization involving the sale of edibles and other derivatives to take effect in Alberta, a major component of that, vaping cartridges, has been put on hold by the provincial government, which has cited health concerns.

Just as Health Canada announced it was launching a testing regime of vaping products that are already legally available in some provinces, the Alberta government said it, too, would review their safety.

Legal age to buy cannabis in Quebec is now 21, the highest in Canada

s of Jan. 1, 2020, the legal age to buy or possess cannabis in Quebec is 21, giving the province the highest minimum age for cannabis use in Canada.

Elsewhere in Canada, cannabis is permitted at age 19, except in Alberta, where the legal age is 18.

The Quebec law, passed by the Coalition Avenir Québec government on Nov. 1, also means people under 21 aren't allowed on the premises of any Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) outlet.

The government rules state that people under 21 will be prohibited from possessing cannabis, even if they bought it legally before the new year.

5 top cannabis stories affecting Vancouver residents in 2019

Some woud argue that the biggest cannabis-related news story of the year revolved around vaping. And they would certainly have a point.

In October, Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada outlined the potential risks and offered guidance to the provinces and territories. This followed several deaths and recent cases of pulmonary illnesses related to this activity in the United States.

The following month, Vancouver city council voted unanimously to ask staff to report back in the first quarter of 2020 on regulatory measures and actions that council can take relating to the sale and promotion of vaping products.

Beverly Ware, spokesperson for the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC), told NEWS 97.5 on Friday that edibles, in particular, are flying off the shelves. The demand for the recently available products has been high, to the point where “almost all” of the Crown corporation’s store locations have treats like cannabis-infused chocolates and gummies in short supply, Ware said.
