‘Misleading’ THC and CBD labelling practices prompts letter from Health Canada

Health Canada reminds producers that displaying THC and CBD values that “have not been obtained as a result of cannabinoid testing on each lot or batch of cannabis” may result in non-compliance.

In March, Mandesh Dosanjh, president and CEO of Pure Sunfarms, wrote a blog post on LinkedIn calling out discrepancies in potency labelling practices among Canadian cannabis companies.

Specifically, Dosanjh wrote that some companies were taking a “static” approach to labelling THC and CBD values, where “one potency label is pre-printed and applied across many batches which fall within a pre-determined range to save on costs.”

Colombia Challenges Canadian Cannabis Dominance

In 2020, Canada became the largest exporter of dried cannabis flower in the world. Today, Canada is looking over its shoulder at a formidable competitor in Colombia, which recently instigated some legislative changes that position the country to become the global cannabis leader. Colombia was already recognized for its robust infrastructure, distribution and exports of certain cannabis products such as medicinal oils and extracts, but the country had a gaping hole in exports by keeping dried cannabis flower strictly verboten.

Cannabis Isn’t Food. Don’t Test It Like It Is.

We continue to see several conflations and misconceptions voiced in the discussion about microbial safety standards for cannabis products. The foundation for these misconceptions is the idea that cannabis testing regulations should mimic the food industry. We reject this idea because cannabis flower has two major departures from food: it contains high concentrations of antibiotics and it is dried and inhaled.

Cannabis Flower Contains High Concentrations of Antibiotics

As much as 20% of cannabis flower weight/volume is made up of cannabinoids, which are potent antibiotics. We have not seen any food on the market that is 20% (weight/volume) antibiotic.

Cannabis drinks market to reach US$6bn by 2031

Conducted by research firm Fact.MR, the study highlights the potential growth of the cannabis beverage category.

Worldwide revenues for cannabis-infused drinks reached US$250 million by the end of 2020.

Over the next decade, the market value is predicted to expand to 24 times that, climbing by 38% CAGR from 2021-2031 to approach US$6bn. CBD-based drinks are anticipated to make up three out of every five sales during that period.

“Beginner cannabis users who want a discreet, accessible, and regulated amount of cannabis are driving increased demand for CBD-infused cannabis drinks,” explained a Fact.MR senior research analyst.

Meanwhile, non-alcoholic cannabis-infused beverages are expected to comprise 50% of consumption.

Tokyo 2020: How Cannabis Has Changed The Olympics Games

It’s been a long road, but the Olympic torch finally landed in Japan on 23 July. The latest edition of the Games has been so mired in difficulty that many feared it might not go ahead, with COVID-19 causing seemingly insurmountable logistical issues. It’s also seen its fair share of controversies, with the conversation around cannabis chief among them.

The 2020 Games in Tokyo is effectively the first in which professional athletes have been allowed to use cannabis-based products while preparing for the competition. CBD use among professional athletes has been allowed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2018, and it’s becoming increasingly popular.

Gardeners get their hands dirty in Yukon's first-ever cannabis growing competition

In Yukon this summer, a slow motion race is unfolding in indoor pots, under tents, and in backyards.

Week by week, the spiky green leaves of hybrid cannabis plants have been pushing their way up — the first crop in the territory's first-ever cannabis growing competition.

It's called the Yukon Cannacup, organized by the Friends of Cannabis, described by president Ross McLeod as a "very informal affiliation of individuals" from around the country.

"There's a lot of stigma in the Yukon, we're hoping this is a way to break some of the ice," said McLeod, who lives in Whitehorse, when asked why he started the Cannacup.

Cannabis-infused beverages have yet to make the leap into shareable sizes

Infused beverages have quickly become my favorite way to consume cannabis, especially during this sweltering, smoky summer. That said, there's something missing in Washington's cannabis market, and it bums me out.

Once upon a time, in the not so distant past, there weren't cannabis products like there are now. There was the weed you could get from a black market dealer, and that was about it. Legalization has led to an explosion of cannabis products, so this bit of complaining is quite possibly the result of being spoiled by an ever-expanding marketplace. Regardless, I want to be able to consume cannabis beverages the way we consume alcoholic beverages like beer, wine and cocktails.

Why Can’t Parents Keep Marijuana Away From Small Children?

Allowing marijuana to be part of national commerce would presumably make it subject to tighter regulations, including packaging that didn’t appeal to small kids.

It was once believed to be propaganda: The idea that children of cannabis consumers were somehow getting their hands on the herb, ingesting it, only to later be strapped to various machines and gizmos down at their local hospital until the high wore off.
