Atlantic Canadians continue to spend most on legal Cannabis

According to the recent release of statistics data by the national statistics agency, the highest sales numbers of cannabis are made by Atlantic Canadians. In their study, Statistics Canada agency analyzed legal cannabis purchase rates for each Canadian province for the first quarter year of pot legalization up to the end of the year 2018.

They found that the residents of Prince Edward Island spend the most on legal cannabis (average of $21.95 per capita) after then come in second the residents of Nova Scotia, who spend on average $17.87 on pot. These data coincide with the study of purchase rates for the first six weeks of legalization, where the results showed the same two provinces with the highest rates of pot sales per capita.

Alberta leads the nation in cannabis stores, retail cannabis sales

In the first months following Canada’s legalization of cannabis, the industry has recorded more than $150 million in retail sales with Alberta leading the way according to Statistics Canada.

As of the end of February, there are 75 retail cannabis stores operating in Alberta, 24 of which are in Calgary. The province’s stores have combined to sell $33 million worth of legal marijuana since October 17, 2018.

Alberta’s place at the top of marijuana sales comes as little surprise to industry experts as the province’s store numbers dwarfs all other provinces. Newfoundland has the second-most cannabis stores in Canada with 25 retail outlets currently operating while other provinces have yet to open a single cannabis store.

The cost of weed: What’s the cannabis tab country-wide?

Canadians have had access to legal recreational cannabis for more than four months and, at this point, prices across the country vary somewhat from province to province.  So how much does a gram of weed cost across Canada?

“Each province and territory in Canada controls distribution, with many of them being the sole distributor of cannabis, similar to alcohol,” explains Lisa Campbell, CEO of Lifford Cannabis Solutions, a cannabis brand agency. “As such, each supplier negotiates rates, which are subject to the federal excise tax, as well as different provincial taxes.”

Nobody could have assumed it back when predictions were being made before legalization, but British Columbia isn’t really pulling in much money from the recreational cannabis industry.

Seeing how B.C. was always seen as Canada’s California when it comes to weed quality, the inability to make profits in the cannabis industry has caught many by surprise.

Others, however, have long foreseen this problem and warned of the incoming uphill battle against the black market growers and dealers.

Growers had nowhere to go

The problem with illegal cannabis flooding the streets of British Columbia is not a new one. In fact, it’s been going on for a while now.
