Bad weed's now the government's problem, and so are the inevitable lawsuits

Whether you're for or against the legalization of cannabis, Canadian taxpayers should know the civil liability that the government has created for all of us.

The Canadian government has failed to recognize that it is not insulated from civil lawsuits in the same way as black-market drug dealers.

Here is some free business advice from a personal injury lawyer to protect our government from the laws of unintended consequences.

Bought bad weed or had a bad trip? You were ingesting an illegal substance bought from a drug dealer. You cannot sue. Any adverse effects are your problem.

Tilray to acquire hemp food company Manitoba Harvest for up to $419M

Cannabis producer Tilray Inc. has signed a deal to acquire Hemp Hearts-maker Manitoba Harvest for up to $419 million in cash and stock as the two companies look to launch CBD-infused products where permissible in the U.S.

The acquisition accelerates the Nanaimo, B.C.-based pot grower's entry into the U.S. market as the hemp food manufacturer's products are already on the shelves of retailers such as Wal-Mart, Costco and Whole Foods on both sides of the border, said Tilray chief executive Brendan Kennedy.

Tilray will look to leverage the food maker's manufacturing facilities in Manitoba and its supply chain to roughly 16,000 stores where their products are already sold in North America, he added.

Cannabis is all the buzz in this year's Oscars' swag bags

The gift bags given to celebrities at the Oscars often contain six figures worth of lavish products, but it’s not the luxury small ship adventure that’s stealing the spotlight this year – it’s cannabis.

A broad collection of cannabis products will be featured for the first time in the swag bags. Lash Fary, founder of Distinctive Assets, the brand that puts together and distributes the gift bags, told Forbes that the inclusion of cannabis products is tied to the legalization of marijuana in California. Fary says the products are designed to help celebrities with their stress and anxiety.

British Columbia is mellowing out when it comes to using cannabis

Contrary to popular perception, British Columbians are not the heaviest users of recreational marijuana, according to new figures from Statistics Canada.

That high-standing belongs to residents of Nova Scotia, where almost 22 per cent of the population (21.6 per cent) aged 15 years and up reported using cannabis during the last three months of 2018. That share amounts to about 170,400 people of the provincial population.

Cannaquestions: Dos and don’ts when it comes to in-house, legal cannabis cultivation in Canada

When it comes to legally growing cannabis at home, the federal regulations could be a challenge to comprehend.

Experts answer three widely anticipated queries that homeowners and tenants could potentially face–queries that were also the point of discussion at Cannabis Living Expo that took place in Toronto last year–and how best to deal with them.

Q1. If a person has an Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) cultivation permit, can someone else from the same household legally grow four plants for recreational use?

A: The short answer is yes.

How Canadians are buying cannabis and getting high now that it’s legal

There was much speculation throughout 2018 about Canada’s soon-to-be-legal cannabis market. But only recently has data become available that shows what cannabis consumers really want and actually buy.

For example, Statistics Canada recently released its National Cannabis Survey.

The most-discussed finding is that cannabis use did not jump after legalization in October. The proportion of Canadians using it stayed around 15 per cent.

That’s good news for politicians who supported legalization, and for physicians concerned that legality would prompt surging usage.

Nova Scotia looks at adding new cannabis stores after low online sales

Nova Scotia is considering expanding the number of retail cannabis stores, as online sales have been slower than expected.

Finance Minister Karen Casey said Thursday that online pot sales were expected to account for about 10 per cent or more of total sales, but are only in the range of six per cent.

Casey said that's why the province has asked the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp. to look at adding to its 12 retail locations currently selling cannabis. She said an expansion would also address geographical gaps in the province.
