Sales of legal bud are reducing purchases of ale and other suds, finance minister claims

The legal sale of cannabis has vaporized more than $6 million worth of provincial beer sales, Manitoba's finance minister claimed as he continued to predict no net revenue from recreational weed.

Almost six months after Canada legalized the sale of recreational cannabis, Manitoba is not expecting to make a profit off the new industry, Finance Minister Scott Fielding said Monday.

Expenditures related to legal cannabis will outpace revenue from its sale for years, said Fielding, who declined to say whether the province will make any cannabis revenue projections in the provincial budget expected on Thursday.

He also suggested any cannabis profits could be offset by reduced beer sales, based on Colorado's experience following legalization.

Kamloops mayor says cannabis landscape likely to change

The mayor of Kamloops, British Columbia says rules around cannabis today may be different tomorrow, after the city recently rejected two different applications for legal pot shops.

Ken Christian says there is still another shoe to drop on the legal cannabis front when edibles are legalized later this year.

He believes that will alter the dynamic and with such a new industry, he thinks there will be a natural re-evaluation of the rules.

Christian says he thinks the entire retail cannabis landscape will be reassessed once legislators have a year or two of legalization under their belts.

He says the city is probably over-served with cannabis stores right now.

HempFest Cannabis Expo lands in Edmonton

When Sacha Hockenhull organized his first cannabis exposition in Calgary four years ago, his friends said he would get arrested and his family threatened to disown him.

On Saturday, he watched hundreds of people file through HempFest at the Edmonton Convention Centre, the first major event of its kind in the city since recreational marijuana legalization.

"Now the conversation is totally different," said Hockenhull. "When I say I run a cannabis show, people say, 'Tell me everything you know.'"

Alberta is leading the country in cannabis retail sales, according to Statistics Canada. The province's retailers sold nearly $33 million worth of cannabis between the Oct. 17 and Dec. 31.

CBSA revealed recently that the number of weed confiscations at the border went up over 60% from 2017 to 2018. In fact, in just over one month after legalization, there were 329 cases where CBSA seized cannabis from travellers at the border.
