The Bahamas: television fantasy vs. darker reality

n July 10, the Bahamas celebrated the 42nd anniversary of its independence from Great Britain. The islands that make up this Caribbean nation have become a must-see tourist destination over the past decades, while Nassau, the capital, has a history that is currently being glorified by Hollywood. The TV series ‘Black Sails,’ aired on the Starz network, depicts what life was like in Nassau in the early 18th century when pirates ruled the Caribbean.

South Dakota: Questions and answers on marijuana initiative

There's a lot of pot talk happening in South Dakota right now.

You might have noticed Steve Young's rundown of the law enforcement issues surrounding the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe's plan to sell marijuana on reservation grounds.

Then there's the medical marijuana ballot initiative movement moving merrily along through the petition process. That one would legalize up to three ounces for medical use.

There's a more ambitious initiative, too, this one announced last week by a group called South Dakotans Against Prohibition. That ballot initiative would decriminalize up to an ounce of pot. Instead of being jailed and charged with a misdemeanor, someone caught with that much or less would get a $100 civil fine.

Detroit police make arrests at marijuana dispensary

Detroit police arrested two people and confiscated two firearms and drugs during a raid on a marijuana dispensary Tuesday afternoon.

Police seized 4,100 grams of marijuana (about 9 pounds), and removed 12 edible marijuana foods from the shelves at Detroit Medz, said Sgt. Cassandra Lewis of Detroit police Media Relations.

"Our Major Violators Unit executed a search warrant at the location at 4:30 p.m.," Lewis said.

According to state law, only Michiganders who possess state registry cards can legally use medical marijuana, but at the shop "they were just selling to anybody who walked in," she said.

I went to a marijuana dispensary in Colorado and it felt just like visiting a wine store

I don't smoke marijuana, but I recently visited Colorado and decided to check out a marijuana dispensary.

Colorado's tourism industry has been skyrocketing, and many claim it's due to January 2014's legalization of the possession and sale of cannabis.

Whether that's true or not, dispensaries are estimated to have brought in $295 million in sales as well as $51 million in tax revenue in 2014. Colorado is ranked one of the fastest-growing economies in the country, and its unemployment rate has seen the biggest drop in the US.

Colorado considers adding PTSD as ailment eligible for treatment with medical marijuana

DENVER — The Colorado Board of Health is considering adding post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of ailments eligible for treatment with medical marijuana.

If approved in a vote Wednesday, Colorado would become the 10th state to make PTSD a qualifying condition for medical pot. In addition, it would be the first condition added to Colorado's registry since voters approved medical marijuana 15 years ago.

The board has rejected PTSD petitions twice before, citing a lack of research. But this year, Dr. Larry Wolk, the state's chief medical officer, is recommending that PTSD be added on a four-year trial basis, so the outcome could change.

Norway sees first synthetic cannabis death

A 22-year-old Norwegian man has died from synthetic marijuana use, making him the first known Norwegian victim of the drug.

Egil André Kvelstad Myhre from Namsos in Norway died the day after a party in March, but was only proven to have died as a result of the drug by a recently completed autopsy.

So-called synthetic marijuana is produced by spraying psychoactive chemicals onto plant matter that can then be smoked or eaten by users.

Teenagers using less marijuana in age of legalization

A new study published The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse has found that teens are using marijuana less frequently and are less attracted to it now that it is decriminalized or legalized at the state level.

The data challenges many assumptions about how changing cannabis laws may impact children.

Opponents of legalization often tout scientifically unsupported notions about teen marijuana use.

Hallucinogenic salvia set to be banned in Canada

The federal government has promised to implement tighter regulations on salvia and it’s finally taking actions. But as Laura Stone reports, critics say it’s not the right approach.

OTTAWA – The Conservative government is expected to fulfill a four-year-old promise to add salvia to its list of controlled substances, Global News has learned.

After making the promise in 2011, Health Canada is set to add the sage specifies S. divinorum to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, making it illegal to possess, traffic and produce it.

“We’ve done our due diligence, we’ve done the studies, we know that these are used by young kids as hallucinogens,” Paul Calandra, parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, said in an interview.

Marijuana Makes Me a Better Mom

Parenthood-induced anxiety is a real thing, and pot is my anti-anxiety drug of choice.

The first time I smoked marijuana and tried to function while stoned was on 4/20 my freshman year of high school. It was a school tradition — everyone knew about "The High," when kids disappeared to get baked and came back to the school's food festival and jazz concert. It also happened to be my 15th birthday. During the afternoon's classes, a teacher glared at me when I failed to answer a question. I knewshe knew I was stoned, and I froze. I got nauseated. I had to leave the room. I had to leave the school. I spent the rest of the day on the lawn, confused and not at all happy to be high.
