Senate president weighs nonbinding 2016 marijuana question

BOSTON — State Senate President Stan Rosenberg says lawmakers should consider putting a nonbinding question on the 2016 ballot asking voters if they would support legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.

The Amherst Democrat said he's trying to avoid the possibility voters might approve another, perhaps poorly written, ballot question also aimed at legalizing pot.

Two pro-pot groups have already said they hope to put questions on the 2016 ballot aimed at the full legalization of it.

Hash oil explosions are concern in legal-marijuana Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. — Emergency crews are worried that the legalization of recreational marijuana in this state could lead to a rise in hash oil explosions, a pattern that's played out with dangerous results in Colorado.

"Potentially, we could see more of these fires and explosions," said Captain Chris Woodford of Forest Grove Fire & Rescue. "Hopefully nobody gets killed."

Forest Grove Fire & Rescue has seen two cases of hash oil explosions over the past few years. In March 2013, five people were hurt when a man cooking hash oil blew up his home.

In January 2014, another man making hash oil sparked a huge explosion in his home. He suffered serious burn injuries.

Lawmakers pushing for marijuana-vote-a-rama

Lawmakers are prepping for what could turn into a "marijuana-vote-a-rama" Wednesday, sources say.

Pot advocates expect lawmakers to introduce at least half a dozen marijuana-related appropriations amendments that would roll back the Justice Department’s authority to enforce drug laws around the country.

The marijuana amendments would handicap the Department of Justice (DOJ) in its fight with states over the enforcement of local pot laws.

“The politics have continued to shift in favor of marijuana law reform,” said Tom Angell, chairman of the Marijuana Majority.

By Anemona Hartocollis

WALLKILL, N.Y. — Don Crawford comes from a long line of Orange County farmers. Though he no longer tends dairy cows, he still cuts hay for the thriving equestrian industry, and cringes at the creep of the suburbs.

So when a stranger came to town and announced plans to grow marijuana on the fallow land next to his, Mr. Crawford was thrilled.

“It’s better than a bunch of houses,” he said.

Lib Dem leadership candidate Norman Lamb calls for cannabis legalisation

The Liberal Democrat leadership candidate Norman Lamb has called for the UK to legalise, regulate and tax the sale of cannabis.

The former care minister and MP for North Norfolk said the UK should draw on examples from US states such as Colorado, which legalised the possession of small amounts of marijuana for recreational use by over-21s in November 2012.

He said he wanted immediate legalisation of the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, and said there should be a swift evidence-based policy change in relation to recreational use.
