Plants pulled from PEI farm fields are hemp, not marijuana say RCMP

Plants seized from farmer's fields were determined to be hemp, not marijuana. (RCMP)

Plants discovered in several farm fields in P.E.I. in late July are hemp, not marijuana say RCMP.

Cpl. Andy Cook of the Prince District Drug Unit said lab tests showed the plants had a low level of THC in them, which is the active ingredient in marijuana.

"They exhibited some signs that were also consistent with marijuana plants, so in the interest of determining definitively what we were dealing with we had them sent away and had a quantitative analysis done which showed the level of THC in them," said Corporal Andy Cook, who is in charge of the Prince District Drug Unit.

We Need to Get the Facts Right on Cannabis Addiction

A contribution from the New Zealand Drug Foundation

In 2013, Professor Wayne Hall presented a paper at an International Cannabis Policy Symposium hosted by the New Zealand Drug Foundation in Auckland. It was a review into 20 years of existing research into cannabis titled "What has research over the past two decades revealed about the adverse health effects of recreational cannabis use?".

So far, so uncontroversial.

Genetic research sheds new light on smoky history of dagga

It has been farmed for over 6000 years, it was used by Queen Victoria, George Washington, Joan of Arc, Ramesses II and possibly Shakespeare - yet how much do we really know about the history of dagga?

Not much according to research published in the free online journal PloS One, which says "due to restrictions on scientific inquiry brought about by drug policy, the evolutionary and domestication history of Cannabis remains poorly understood."

In order to correct this, the University of British Colombia performed the first large scale genetic study of Marijuana and hemp.

Canada is the world's leader in the production of hemp.

What Marijuana May Do to Sperm

According to science, you may want to lay off the weed if you’re trying to conceive.

Smoking pot could damage your semen quality, or so suggests a new study out of Denmark. Some 1,215 Danish men ages 18 to 28 were asked about their drug use over the past three months and provided a semen sample. The researchers found a correlation between men who smoked pot more than once weekly and “quite a lot” of a drop in sperm count: the count was an average 29 percent lower in these men than in those who reported lighter or no usage.

Those who reported additional drug use (anything from cocaine to ecstasy) saw an even more severe reduction, with average sperm count down 55 percent.
