Shatter, a powerful marijuana derivative, hits New Brunswick

Police warn of dangers of using and producing the drug that looks like peanut brittle, or taffy.

A new powerful form of marijuana has popped up in New Brunswick, and police are warning about the dangers of using and producing the drug.

Shatter, named for its often peanut brittle-like texture and tendency to break into glass-like shards, is a concentrated derivative of marijuana.

It has a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) level of between 70 and 99 per cent, said Const. Dylan Lisson, of the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force. THC is the ingredient in marijuana that produces a high.

By comparison, the THC level of standard marijuana is about five to 18 per cent, said Lisson.

Inside the Corporate Takeover of America's Marijuana Industry

Marijuana is a $40 billion business — and the guys gearing up to turn ganja into the next McDonald's don't even smoke the stuff. Is the culture of weed about to go up in smoke, or are we just paranoid?

Would you like some Alien Asshat? It’s $42 for two grams, or $11 for a half-gram pre-rolled joint, on the menu at a tidy little pot shop called the Seattle Cannabis Company. Also available: Super Silver Goo, Snoop’s Dream, Grand Daddy Purple, and White Widow. There’s a pot named God and another named Jesus. There’s also Juicy Fruit and Girl Scout Cookies, varieties made by two different growers, presumably battling it out to see who can get sued first.

By Dr. M-J Milloy

As a scientist working to improve the health of people living with HIV/AIDS who use illicit drugs, I'm reminded every day of the impacts of our government's policies on drugs. What's more, I have seen how misinformation about drugs can lead to ineffective and even harmful drug policies.

Canada's Justin Trudeau: Liberal government would look at overturning convictions for marijuana crimes

Canadians sitting in prison or stuck with a criminal record for crimes related to marijuana have a reason to vote Liberal in this October’s federal election.

At an August 19 campaign stop in Vancouver, prime ministerial hopeful Justin Trudeau reiterated a campaign promise to legalize cannabis for recreational purposes. He then went one step further, adding that after a Liberal government is elected and has reversed laws that criminalize marijuana, it will begin discussing what should happen with people who have been charged for transgressions that the country no longer considers criminal.

Majority of Canadians support decriminalizing marijuana

More Canadians than ever support decriminalizing marijuana, according to a new Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of Global News.

Ipsos found 65 per cent of Canadians (29 per cent strongly/36 per cent somewhat) support the decriminalization of marijuana so that possession of small amounts would no longer carry a penalty or fine.  Conversely, 35 per cent of people oppose (18 per cent strongly/17 per cent somewhat) decriminalization.

“It’s not an overly contentious issue and what I mean by contentious is, you’ve got certain people who really agree with it and groups who really oppose it,” Sean Simpson, vice president of Ipsos, said in an interview Wednesday.

You can now study marijuana management at a Canadian university

For marijuana sellers looking to add finesse to their weed growing skills, a university in Canada has designed a course to bring marijuana dealing to professional standards.

The Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Vancouver is offering a course in marijuana management. Introduction to Professional Management of Marijuana for Medical Purposes in Canada will be available as an online course lasting 14 weeks from this Autumn.

It will be divided into two main learning strands; Marketing Sales and Drug Development, followed by Plant Production and Facility Management.

However, the course is not cheap and will set back marijuana sellers a hefty $1,249.

Sales of opioid drug prescriptions in Canada skyrocketing

Prescriptions for dangerous alternatives to OxyContin are soaring, showing that a crackdown on the popular painkiller has failed to curb Canada’s opioid crisis.

OxyContin, a brand-name version of oxycodone, was once the top-selling long-acting opioid in Canada. But it became a lightning rod in the early 2000s as reports of addiction and overdose exploded, prompting every province except Alberta in 2012 to stop funding the drug and its reformulated, tamper-resistant version, OxyNEO, which is difficult to crush or chew for a quick high.

Similar restrictions were not placed on other addictive opioids, a move many experts say had the unintended consequence of shifting patients from one drug to another and escalating the prescription-drug crisis.
