Veterans React To Denial Of PTSD Classification Of Medical Marijuana: 'I'm Angry, I'm Confused'

DENVER (CBS4)– Many military veterans are upset after the Colorado Board of Health failed to approve Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, as a condition for medical marijuana.

“I’m angry, I’m upset and I’m confused,” said U.S. Army veteran Rusty Guenard who expressed his disbelief after Wednesday’s vote.

Board members voted 6-2 against adding PTSD to the medical conditions approved for medical marijuana treatment.

After two hours of often times emotional public testimony, the vote was announced and shouts of outrage filled a packed house at the Colorado Board of Health.

“You’re a bunch of liars and you all gotta sleep with yourselves!” said one medical marijuana supporter.

Women marijuana growers seek to move beyond ‘breasts and buds’ stereotype

With widespread anticipation that California voters could legalize recreational marijuana use for adults next year, a generation of women growers are poised to shed the term “activist” for “CEO.”

About two dozen women working in the North Coast’s flourishing medical cannabis industry will be rubbing elbows after business hours Thursday in downtown Santa Rosa during a launch party for a local chapter of Women Grow, a for-profit networking company.

The women say they aim to break through what some call the “green ceiling” of an industry traditionally run by men, with marketing heavily skewed toward able-bodied heterosexual males.

Colorado rejects PTSD as ailment eligible for medical pot

The vote was the third time the board has rejected petitions to add PTSD to the list. About five dozen PTSD sufferers attended the hearing, some loudly jeering. A few were asked to leave.

"They just told every patient here, 'We don't care about you,' " said patient advocate Teri Robnett after the vote.

Colorado allows adults older than 21 to buy pot for recreational use, with no doctor's recommendation needed. But medical pot in Colorado is taxed at 2.9 percent, compared with at least 19 percent for recreational pot. Medical patients are allowed to possess twice as much marijuana: 2 ounces instead of 1 ounce.

Voters approved medical and recreational legalization.

Presidential Candidates Begin Talking About Marijuana

The 2016 presidential candidates are discussing marijuana legalization in ways unimaginable less than a decade ago.

Candidates from both parties are accepting substantial donations from business owners and activists in the marijuana industry that hope to expanded marijuana legalization in the U.S. The marijuana industry also landed their first major candidate: Rand Paul.

In June, Paul became the first major-party presidential candidate to hold a fundraiser with the legalized marijuana industry, courting about 40 donors at the Denver event.

Pot-pioneering Colorado rejects marijuana as PTSD treatment

DENVER (AP) — Colorado is known for pushing boundaries on marijuana, but health officials' decision to reject pot as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder shows the issue is far from settled.

Voters have made marijuana legal for both medical and recreational use, but government officials at every level have continually pushed back.

The state Board of Health voted 6-2 Wednesday against adding PTSD to the list of ailments eligible for treatment with medical marijuana. It came despite a recommendation from Colorado's chief medical officer and a panel of physicians.

Board members cited a lack of research, including medical trials.

"We have an absence of scientific information," board member Rick Brown said.

Colorado marijuana tax for schools hits record, exceeds 2014 total

DENVER — A year after Colorado's marijuana tax for schools came in far short of its goal, the fund is setting records and has accrued more money in the first five months in 2015 than it did for all of 2014.

Recently released tax data showed the 15 percent excise tax for school construction hit $3.5 million in May, the most recent data available. That brings the 2015 total to $13.7 million, edging the $13.3 million it raised in all of 2014.

The jump is partly because there are more marijuana stores and partly because shops last year were given a one-time tax-exempt transfer of their medical plants to the recreational pot side.

"It sounds very encouraging," said state senator Pat Steadman, D-Denver.
