New ‘Dateline’ to explore Charlotte’s Web, calls Colorado ‘a new Lourdes’

“To these people, marijuana isn’t about getting high, it’s about getting well,” Harry Smith narrates in NBC’s “Dateline” episode about medical marijuana June 7.

“Growing Hope” chronicles the lives of children with intractable epilepsy, following three families from Virginia to Colorado. Their mission is to legalize CBD and THCA oils, compounds that come from the marijuana and hemp plants. The non-psychoactive strain of medicinal marijuana has shown promise in reducing chronic seizures.

Jeffco board asks for non-retail pot options for unincorporated areas

GOLDEN — It’s unlikely that unincorporated Jefferson County will see retail marijuana shops soon, although the Board of Commissioners could be on board with allowing pot testing facilities in the near future.

At a special staff briefing Friday, commissioners gave county staff a more clear direction on areas to study regarding the marijuana industry before the commissioners make a decision on how to proceed. The county has a moratorium banning the marijuana business in unincorporated areas until Jan. 1, 2016.

Legislature warns Denver: Hands off marijuana pesticide regulation

Before they adjourned on May 6, the Colorado General Assembly sent a little warning to the city of Denver: Pesticide regulations are the purview of the state, not the city.

In March, the City of Denver’s Department of Environmental Health inspected 10 marijuana grow facilities. It required several growers to quarantine their plants based on pesticide use the department considered dangerous for human consumption. One grower had to quarantine 60,000 plants, which means they cannot be sold for people to consume. Losses for the growers could total in the millions, since some plants can be valued up to $1,000 each.

Watch: Medical Marijuana refugees return home to better life

CANTON, Ga. --Two months ago, Georgia passed a controversial and life-changing law for some families in need of medical marijuana.

Corey Lowe's daughter Victoria was one of the first people in the state to receive a temporary permit to use it. Victoria suffers from mitochondrial disease and an incredible number of seizures, but Lowe said cannabis oil helps.

"She would have 50 a day, 50 to 100 a day, before cannabis oil -- gut wrenching," said Corey Lowe.

Lowe said she tried everything -- dozens of drugs, any kind of medicine she could get her hands on -- but it didn't work.

"They couldn't get her seizures to stop," said Lowe.

Without Federal Input, Colorado Pot Is On Its Own With Pesticides

The marijuana industry has a pesticide problem.

Many commercial cannabis growers use chemicals to control bugs and mold. But because of the plant’s unresolved legal status, Colorado regulators are having a tough time making sure pot buyers don’t ingest those pesticides. The parts of the federal government that regulate agricultural pesticide use want nothing to do with legalized marijuana.

“In the absence of any direction, the subject of pesticide use on the crop has just devolved to just whatever people think is working or whatever they think is appropriate,” says Colorado State University entomologist Whitney Cranshaw.

Marijuana-Infused Smoked Salmon Is The Future Of Breakfast

What's better than baked salmon? Salmon that gets you baked!

THC-infused treats are everywhere now that legal weed is becoming socially acceptable. But most of the options on the market today are sweet, likely because it's easy to cover up the taste of marijuana with chocolate.

But the folks at Rosenberg's Bagels in Denver are pioneers for infusing smoked salmon with THC, bringing weed over to the savory side and, more importantly, to breakfast.

"The flavor is really great, not that weed brownie flavor that you try to cover up with chocolate," Rosenberg's General Manager Nicholas Bruno (aka Nicky The Fish) told The Huffington Post. "The dill, lemon and cannabis, everything melds perfectly with the fish."

Fear, Loathing, And Space Cakes: How Should States Regulate Marijuana Edibles?

In many respects, Colorado is leading all cannabis states into the 21st century of cannabis regulation. On a seemingly monthly basis, Colorado confronts first impression cannabis issues with which other states have yet to grapple. One of those emerging issues is how to regulate edibles and marijuana-infused products. Washington and other states are really just beginning to visit this topic, but Colorado already has a deep love/hate, “we get it”/”we have no idea” relationship with regulations for infused marijuana products.

Medical cannabis should be legal to treat epilepsy

Marijuana and its legal status is a hot-button issue these days, with Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, the state of Washington and Washington D.C. recently legalizing non-medical use of marijuana. Medical marijuana, used for real medical afflictions like epilepsy, inflammatory diseases and neurodegenerative diseases, should be legal nationwide. You might think medical marijuana is just an excuse to sell legal weed and, for the most part, I agree. However, there exists true medical marijuana: cannabis oil from strains high in Cannabidiol (CBD), used to treat patients with epilepsy.
