Mississauga councillors vote against allowing legal cannabis stores once again

Mississauga councillors have voted against a proposal to allow legal cannabis dispensaries in the city, this time despite vocal support from Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

Mississauga initially opted not to allow legalized cannabis stores within city boundaries back in 2018 but local councillors had agreed to revisit that decision following a report from staff that examined the experiences of other municipalities.

However, on Thursday members of the Mississauga council general committee ultimately came to the same decision as they did three years ago, voting 8 to 4 against allowing legal cannabis stores to set up shop.

The matter will still have to go before Mississauga city council for a final vote.

Will cannabis shops start opening in Mississauga?

Marijuana. Weed. Pot. Grass. Cannabis. Call it what you like, but it will be a huge money maker for Mississauga businesses if City councillors decide to let stores open here.

A report that will be presented to councillors in the next few days shows that legalized cannabis stores will initially generate $74 million in income each year in total for operators if they are allowed to set up shop.

Currently Mississauga doesn't allow cannabis stores to operate within its borders following a decision in 2018 when local politicians decided not to opt-in to the Provincially-run program.
