UK Cannabis Regulation: This Is All Very Entertaining, But Can We Have Some Facts Please?

We began this week with two articles on the recent Lib Dem-commissioned expert panel report on cannabis regulation. First, we interviewed Professor Harry Sumnall to find out how regulation would affect public health. Second, we published Christopher Snowdon’s critique of the model (spoiler: he had some big issues with it). George Murkin of drug policy think tank Transform now offers his response, and he would like to correct Christopher on a few points…

Jamaica may legalise weed and get rid of the Queen

Jamaican lawmakers will debate a constitutional amendment that would replace Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II as head of state and make the island a republic.

The proposal is a “major action item” on the new government’s 2016-2017 legislative agenda, and would replace the Queen with a Non-Executive President, Governor General Sir Patrick Allen said Thursday in a speech to parliament posted on the government’s website.

Jamaican Labour Party leader Andrew Holness scraped a narrow win in general elections in February as voters opted for promises of tax cuts and a higher minimum wage over the previous government’s austerity program.

State of the Leaf: Costa Rica Gets Closer to Legalizing Medical Marijuana

International progress abounds from beyond the borders! Costa Rica already decriminalized cannabis, but now it's considering a major medical marijuana program, New Zealand’s Labour Party is trying to solve a problem like medical cannabis access, and the United Kingdom found that the number of cannabis arrests have been cut nearly in half in the last five years.

Stateside, Alaska’s retail licenses are being held up by the Legislature, Arizona’s recreational campaign calls out the hypocrisy of a critic, New Hampshire could decriminalize cannabis possession (again), and Vermont is a hop, skip and one House vote away from legalizing recreational cannabis. This year will be historical for cannabis – are you paying attention?

Fondues And Fine Teas: Repositioning Pot For The Middle Classes

Imagine a world where most of the global adult population consume a gentle, natural, herbal drug every day that contains psychoactive compounds that relax and revive them. It is often consumed in a social ritual of bonding, conversation and empathy. And this is seen as quite unremarkable.

Biotech Breakup: What is the Impact on Biotech Stocks focused on Cannabis?

The termination of the $160 billion merger between Pfizer Inc. (PFE) and Allergan Plc (AGN) has been confirmed.

The driving factor behind this decision stems from the rules issued by the United States Treasury Department which are focused on making tax inversion deals less profitable.

Moving Addresses, Not Assets

President Obama said the rules are meant to limit one of the most indirect tax loopholes available and prevent companies from decreasing their tax liability.

The reason why this deal came under such scrutiny is not only due to the size of the deal, but also its structure.

UK Cannabis Possession Arrests Fall by Almost 50% Since 2010

In the same five year period cautions for possession fell 48 per cent and the number of people charged fell by 33 per cent.

A 46 per cent fall in the number of arrests for cannabis possession in England and Wales shows the Government must start "developing rational, evidence based policies as alternatives to criminalising cannabis consumers," advocates of cannabis legalisation say.

Data released after a freedom of information request by the BBC shows arrests fell between 2010 and 2015 from 35,367 to 19,115.

In the same five year period, cautions for possession fell 48 per cent and the number of people charged fell by 33 per cent.

GW Pharmaceuticals Seeks FDA Approval For Cannabis Based Epidiolex

Children afflicted with Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy, have been effectively treated with a cannabis-based drug, Epidiolex, containing cannabinoids, the GW Pharmaceuticals announced Monday. Investors snapped up shares of the little-known firm, effectively doubling the company’s market value overnight.

GW Pharmaceuticals are seeking approval for Epidiolex from U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Analysts expect GW Pharmaceuticals Epidiolex to cost $2,500 to $5,000 a month, which would be more expensive than some of the medical marijuana products, which cost from about $100 to more than $1,000 per month. However, Epidiolex might be covered by insurance, unlike the other products.

The Brits are Modelling Their Cannabis Legislation After the US

Britain's politicians have devised a pragmatic way to handle the possible legalization of cannabis in the near future.

The report drafted by legislators is calling for the UK to follow the lead from the United States by allowing those 18 and older to legally purchase cannabis in licensed retail locations. Legalizing the drug would also generate upwards of one-billion British pounds in tax revenue and reduce the harm done to users in society.

The panel, set up last year by the former Liberal Democrat health minister Norman Lamb, has been chaired by Steve Rolles from the Transform Drug Policy Foundation.
