“The War on Drugs is Over”

New findings suggest the link between the use of marijuana and mental illness may not be as prevalent as first thought.

Decriminalise all personal drug use, say Scottish LibDems

HEROIN, cocaine and ecstasy users should face police warnings instead of prison if found with small amounts of drugs for their personal use, the Scottish LibDems will argue this week.

The party will use its Spring conference to advocate decriminalising drug use - as opposed to drug dealing - in a fundamental reform of how addiction is dealt with by the authorities.

Leader Willie Rennie will ask delegates to make treating drug use a health and social issue rather than a criminal one a key manifesto pledge for May’s Holyrood election.

Bitcoin cannabis order goes wrong

A British man in Paphos has been taken into custody after police discovered that he had ordered illegal drugs online with the use of the bitcoin digital currency to pay for mail delivery.

The 23-year-old expart had visited an underground social forum where he was able to use bitcoin credit to pay for his order, said to be 30 grams of cannabis.

The order was processed in Canada where the illegal drugs were sealed in an envelope and were delivered to the suspect in Konia community in Cyprus.

Local police had been informed about the delivery and were on the lookout for the man picking up the package. It is believed that the sealed envelope was protected in such a way that it would not have been easy for someone to know its contents inside.

This Gene May Predict How You React To Marijuana

We've long known that pot can affect different people in various ways -- some smokers only experience a slight "buzz" while others can become paranoid or even hallucinate.

Now, a team of researchers in the U.K. has found a way to identify which cannabis users are more at risk of developing such strong reactions.

AKT1 Gene Could Help Identify Psychosis, Memory Loss Risk In Marijuana Users

Researchers have identified a gene which can be used to predict how susceptible a young person is to the mind-altering effects of smoking marijuana, an increasing concern as the cultural movement shifts toward legalization.  Around one percent of cannabis users develop psychosis. It is known that smoking cannabis daily doubles an individual's risk of developing a psychotic disorder, but it has been difficult to establish who is most vulnerable.

UK: CISTA election push as it opens headquarters in Omagh

CISTA says it hopes to run 18 candidates for May’s Assembly election.

It’s one year since CISTA (Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol) was officially launched, calling for reform of the UK’s laws on cannabis.

The organisation recently opened a headquarters for the North in Omagh.

Plans to run 18 candidates marks a significant increase on the four who contested the 2014 Westminster election in the North. Running 18 candidates should also ensure that the party is guaranteed a televised party election broadcast later this year.

CISTA NI leader Barry Brown, who will stand in West Tyrone, said 14 other people have so far expressed interest in standing for the party across the North on May 5.

UK: Massive public support for cannabis to be legalised

NINE out of ten people have backed calls for cannabis to be legalised for recreational use in an Evening Mail poll.

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP and Liberal Democrat leader, Tim Farron, is expected to become the first leader of a major political party to call for the class B drug to be made legal for social use at the party's spring conference next month.

And it appears plenty of people support his view in south Cumbria as 90 per cent of respondents to a survey on www.nwemail.co.uk agree it should be made legal.

The news has attracted debate across social media and local politicians have voiced their views for and against the idea.
