UK Response to Debate - Large majority of voters back cannabis legalisation

The majority of our online voters in today's debate believe that it should be right to legalise cannabis for recreational use.

This comes after a Cumbria MP called for the legalisation of cannabis for recreational use - sparking a row with an aspiring police and crime commissioner.

Tim Farron, the Westmorland and Lonsdale MP, will back a motion calling for his Liberal Democrats party to extend its existing support for the legalisation of cannabis for medicinal use to recreational use.

The motion follows the release of findings from an expert, Lib Dem-appointed panel.

Mr Farron becomes the first main party leader to propose decriminalising the drug for social use.

Founding member Scott Kidd, from Aberdeen, said: “They gave us £50, we bought lots of scarves and started wrapping them round poles.

“It’s just one of our initiatives to get things going and get the club out there, let people know that we’re not just crazy people and we want to help.

“I’ve had loads of people on Facebook say they’ve spotted them around town. We’ve got to hope they’ve done some good.”

Pot Head Gets Suspended Sentence For Lousy Cannabis Grow

A judge has handed down a reduced sentence to a cannabis grower in the U.K. after sympathizing with his predicament.

20-year-old Joshua Hughes made a bosh job at his first attempt to grow cannabis indoors in order to maintain his 20-a-day joint habit.

His defense lawyer pleaded his case by calling him “dim witted” for flooding his flat which led to his arrest. The judge agreed with the defense and called the defendant “incompetent” in maintaining a grow, and gave him a suspended sentence.

Cannabis party candidate joins the race for London mayor

An elderly hippy aims to campaign for the legalisation of cannabis by joining the mayoral contest — backed by the multi-millionaire founder of social networking site Bebo.

Lee Harris — who 50 years ago was among the first to seek the prohibition of drugs in Britain, is gathering the required signatures in order to compete against Tory candidate Zac Goldsmith and Labour’s Sadiq Khan.

The 79-year-old grandfather, who owns a “head shop” on Portobello Road called Alchemy, was a self-confessed “moral crusader” before changing his outlook. He is now the CISTA (Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol) party candidate, and hopes to “undo the damage” he helped to cause decades ago.
