Marijuana Kills Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

When antibiotic drugs were first discovered in 1928, they revolutionized healthcare. By the end of World War II, their production had exploded.

Decades later, things have changed.

Today, according to an estimate from the CDC, about half of the antibiotic prescriptions in the United States are totally unnecessary. The effects of that over-prescription are serious.

Loss of DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz Is a Boost for Cannabis Legalization

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has come under intense fire in recent days over internal emails released by WikiLeaks that appear to show the party favoring Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign over that of Sen. Bernie Sanders. Wasserman Schultz will no longer have a major speaking role at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this week, and some veteran Dems are now calling for her resignation for the sake of party unity.

Boulder Entrepreneurs See Big Things for Hemp

The nondescript building in east Boulder is like many other in the city; it is, in fact, identical to several surrounding structures. Passing motorists and pedestrians wouldn’t know that there’s a multi-million dollar manufacturing operation inside. And that’s the way the folks at CW Hemp want it.

Even if someone did manage to peek inside the 18,000-square-foot lab, warehouse and office space, they wouldn’t know that one of the most famous strains of hemp in the world is processed here.

Between 600 and 1,000 units of CW’s product ship from the premises each month, extracted from a strain of the plant called Charlotte’s Web, made famous by the 2013 Sanjay Gupta-hosted CNN documentary “Weed.”

Colorado Town Finds No Marijuana Chemical in Water, Cancels Restrictions

A Colorado farming town on Saturday ended restrictions put on the local water supply this week after it warned residents to avoid drinking the town’s water because THC, the psychoactive agent in marijuana, was found in a feeder well.

The local sheriff said a criminal investigation has been launched to look into possible tampering of the well in Hugo, a town of about 800 people some 90 miles (145 kms) southeast of Denver.

"The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has just reached out to us and advised that samples taken from Well #1 and throughout town are NEGATIVE for THC," the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said on its Facebook page on Saturday.

The water restrictions were lifted on Saturday morning, Lincoln County Public Health said in a Facebook post.

The group, called Canopy San Diego, is accepting applications for its pot-themed technology accelerator, a first for Southern California. The concept is to find and fund early-stage companies with ideas that can assist the state’s dispensaries and growers. That could range from water conservation tools to more optimal packaging; payroll software to analytics.

Dope Reads: Publishers Have High Hopes for Marijuana Books

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and if this season’s marijuana-related books are any indication, the topic of weed—once alternative, now increasingly mainstream—is burning up. Forthcoming titles include user’s guides, cocktail recipe books, takes on the global legalization debate, and more, all of which aim to help readers enjoy, or at least contemplate, our new, greener times. The trend is all the more notable because large publishers are doing as much as their smaller counterparts to light up interest in the subject.

Key Players Seek to Shape Future of Cannabis Industry

Personalities and group dynamics can push decisions.

Laws now proposed could, in the next year, allow cannabis to become a fully sanctioned industry in Calaveras County that contributes an estimated $15 million to $20 million a year in local taxes. Another proposal could ban the industry.

Although every county voter will get a say, a much smaller number of individuals and groups are shaping the public debate. Here’s a look at them.

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors

The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors is a five-person board and it is the authority that can make local laws concerning registration and enforcement of commercial, caregiver and personal cultivation of cannabis.
