Colorado Marijuana Report: More Adults Using Drug, but Not Kids

The state released a report Monday detailing changes in everything from pot arrests to tax collections to calls to Poison Control.

Colorado kids are not smoking more pot since the drug became legal — but their older siblings and parents certainly are, according to a long-awaited report giving the most comprehensive data yet on the effects of the state's 2012 recreational marijuana law.

The state released a report Monday detailing changes in everything from pot arrests to tax collections to calls to Poison Control. Surveys given to middle-schoolers and high-schoolers indicate that youth marijuana use didn't rise significantly in the years after the 2012 vote.

Orlando Leaders Discuss Marijuana Ordinance

A marijuana ordinance passed its first reading Monday in a 4 to 3 vote.

Leaders will return for a second vote on May 9.

It was a packed house at Orlando City Hall on Monday as leaders discussed the ordinance that will decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.

Some residents spoke out with major concerns about how marijuana offenses will be handled in Orlando in the future.

“We feel it’s a gateway drug. We feel it leads to young people trying other things,” said opponent Jim Millar.

Others were worried about how the proposed rules would be enforced.

“It is a false sense of protection, especially for people of color in Districts 5 and 6,” said opponent Cynthia Harris.

Advocates Push to Let Patients Use Marijuana to Treat Opiate Addiction

On Tuesday, Maine will be the first state to formally consider the idea, even though the federal government still classifies marijuana as an illicit drug.

Medical marijuana caregivers and patients will ask state regulators Tuesday to consider adding opiate addiction as a qualifying condition for medical marijuana.

Maine will be the first state to formally consider allowing medical marijuana to be used as treatment for addiction to opiates and other drugs derived from chemical synthesis, said Dawson Julia, a caregiver from Unity who submitted a petition to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to request the public hearing.

Oregon to marijuana dispensaries: No 4/20 raffles, giveaways

The Oregon Health Authority on Monday reminded medical marijuana dispensary operators that they can't sponsor raffles or contests that include free pot as a prize.

The bulletin was issued during the week of 4/20, the unofficial holiday of sorts for the marijuana set.

"Marijuana may not be given as a prize, premium or consideration for a lottery, contest, game of chance, game of skill or competition of any kind," according to the memo from André Ourso, manager of the state's medical marijuana program.

Ourso also reminded dispensaries that on-site marijuana consumption isn't allowed unless it's by an employee.

Marijuana-Related Hospitalizations Spike in Colo. After Passage of Recreational Pot Law: Report

Hospitals and treatment centers in Colorado have seen an increase in marijuana use among patients since recreational pot became legal in January 2014, while weed-related arrests have predictably plummeted significantly, a new report reveals.

While the author of an 147-page study released by the Colorado Department of Public Safety on Monday cautions that it’s too soon to truly measure the impact of the state’s first-in-the-nation recreational marijuana laws, statistics so far suggest that facilities have seen an explosion with respect to patients who have either been hospitalized as a result of weed.
