From Doobie Depot to Mood Solutions, Here Are Alaska's First Marijuana Business Applicants

From Herbal Outfitters LLC to Dazed Dog Gardens, there's no shortage of creative and pun-laden business names in the nearly 200 marijuana business licenses that are currently working through the state system, which were released Tuesday.

The public can now see all the in-progress marijuana business applications on the Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office’s website. For businesses that are far enough along in their applications, a public notice is also linked in the spreadsheet that provides the name of the owner and the exact location of the business, according to Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office Director Cynthia Franklin.

Ravens Tackle Gives $10K to Marijuana Research, Asks Players to Chip In

An NFL official admitted for the first time Monday evening that there is a link between football and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). In response, Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Eugene Monroe sprang into action with a series of 38 tweets and six retweets advocating for research on how cannabinoids (i.e. medicinal marijuana) can help curb traumatic brain injuries.

A sampling of Monroe's message:

Poll: The Only Drug Americans Want to Legalize Is Marijuana

Over the past few years, a growing number of Americans have voiced their support for legalizing marijuana, leading four states to legalize it for recreational and medical uses and 19 more for only medical purposes.

But does this sentiment apply to other illicit drugs? That's what Vox and Morning Consult sought to find out in a new poll of nearly 2,000 registered US voters.

The results overwhelmingly suggest that marijuana is a big outlier, and most US voters do not support decriminalizing non-marijuana drugs or legalizing them for medical or recreational purposes.

Billy Crystal's Banned Cannabis Commercial

Billy Crystal - who turns 68 this week - is undeniably a comedy legend. But when he was just another up-and-comer, his first big break was actually a bust, all because of network practices regarding marijuana.

Back in the early 70s, the "When Harry Met Sally" star was a member of the struggling comedy trio "3's Company". However, opportunity came knocking when they were signed by TV host David Frost to make an appearance on a network special called "That Was The Year That Was" (1973).

Science Says: No, You Can’t Overdose On Weed

I had someone ask me the other day why I support the use of medicinal marijuana. “We could have kids and innocent people overdosing, and that alone makes it unworthy of any support,” she said. That was sort of the Cliff Notes version of a very long and drawn out conversation I had with a very well-meaning, yet totally uneducated person regarding medicinal marijuana. This person could not understand why parents would administer something to their children without clear dosage guidelines, and when an overdose could cause them to die.

Inside Pesticide-Free Certification Program for Pot Grows

As commercial marijuana grows in Colorado continue to receive plant quarantines and product recalls over the use of potentially harmful pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, one industry group is trying to set up a way to ensure safe growing practices. The Organic Cannabis Association's pesticide-free certification program will test participating grows for residuals of harmful pesticides and award scores based on the products used at the grow.

"We view cannabis producers as just another set of farmers," says John-Paul Maxfield, chairman of the OCA. "This is our first step toward building a larger organic certification."

Getting painkillers seems easy. Getting help to fight painkiller addiction is hard.

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Addiction to prescription painkillers and heroin has grown so deadly that the Obama administration wants to spend more than $1 billion over the next two years fighting it. Nearly all of the money would go to making anti-addiction medications, including buprenorphine, more available.

Yet in the midst of the worst epidemic of unintentional drug overdose in U.S. history — mortality rates are four to fives times as high as in the mid-1970s, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — it can be harder to get drugs to treat an addiction than it is to get the drugs that feed it.
