Three senators, two Democrats and a Republican, introduced a bill on Monday that would allow patients to use marijuana for medical purposes in states where it is legal, without fear of federal prosecution for violating narcotics laws.

The bill makes a number of important changes to federal marijuana policies — and it deserves to be passed by Congress and enacted into law. Though this legislation would not repeal the broad and destructive federal ban on marijuana, it is a big step in the right direction.

The owner of Uncle Ike's says he'll open later on Sundays and offer his parking lot to churchgoers to "reduce tensions" with the church next door. 

After protests and a fizzled lawsuit, Uncle Ike’s Pot Shop is offering an olive branch to the church next door: a later opening time on Sundays and free parking.

The Rhode Island Fire Marshall has said that he has "serious concerns" about marijuana growing facilities in Rhode Island.

State Fire Marshall John Chartier spoke with GoLocal following a five alarm fire on Kinsley Avenue that was put out on Tuesday, where the Cannabis Producer Association of New England (CPA) had been located. 

Chartier said as an investigation is underway that he couldn't speak to the cause of the fire that began Monday night that required mutual aid from additional Rhode Island towns and injured one firefighter, but he did address his concerns about marijuana growing facilities in general in Rhode Island the state.

Brighton residents who are growing marijuana in their homes need to ensure that their plants are at least two feet lower than the ceiling, according to one of the new indoor cultivation regulations adopted by City Council.

The state has regulations for home grows per Amendment 64, but Brighton officials localized those rules by imposing limits on grow room sizes, as well as additional safety requirements like not allowing the plants or storage material to reach the ceiling and risk fire hazards with grow lights.

Colorado pot businesses sold a record amount of marijuana in January, resulting in an excise tax of $2.3 million designated for public schools, state officials said Wednesday.

Based on the Colorado Department of Revenue data, around $36.4 million of recreational marijuana was sold this January compared to about $14.69 million sold the same month last year.

"This is really what we expected and hope to see: a shift in the underground market to a regulated market," said legalization advocate Mason Tvert. "It's clearly generating significant revenue for the state."

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Supporters of a constitutional amendment that would legalize marijuana in Ohio said their plan could generate $554 million in annual tax revenue once the industry has been established.

ResponsibleOhio released initial tax revenue projections for its legalization proposal, which limits commercial growing of marijuana to 10 pre-selected sites promised to campaign investors. Marijuana would be taxed 15 percent at production and manufacturing facilities and 5 percent at retail locations, with tax revenues going toward local governments, addiction services, and marijuana research.

Ian James, architect of a proposal to legalize pot in Ohio, said it stemmed from a simple notion: "Let's take this from the tie-dye to the suit-and-tie approach to marijuana."

James, CEO of the Strategy Network, a Columbus political consulting firm, turned to Cincinnati lawyer Chris Stock for help. Would Stock draft a proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution that would outline how pot would be regulated for personal and medical use? "I've never used marijuana in my life," Stock told James. "I'm not sure I want to be involved." But he relented.

Early last year, the broker for a 100,000-square-foot warehouse near Las Vegas called the power company to find out how much juice the building would need.

Longtime NV Energy executive Arnold Lopez went out to meet a group on the site and asked what kind of business they planned.

After some hesitation, they told him: medical marijuana cultivation.

Lopez asked questions and started doing some quick math. And, as he recalled, “All of a sudden I came up with numbers I’d never seen before.”

That single marijuana-growing operation, he estimated, could require 5 megawatts of capacity — enough to power 1,000 homes. That’s about 5 percent of the capacity of an entire substation.

LANSING, MI -- Landlords would be granted clear authority to ban medical marijuana use on their property under legislation approved Tuesday by the Michigan Senate.

The legislation, approved in a 34-3 vote and now headed to the House for further consideration, requires a three-quarters majority support in each chamber because it would amend Michigan's voter-approved medical marijuana law.

Sponsoring Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, said the bill would simply codify a 2011 opinion from Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, who determined that apartment owners can prohibit the smoking or growing of marijuana without violating the medical law.
