The medical marijuana business could save Native American reservations

At the very first Tribal Marijuana Conference held last weekend in Tulalip, WA, the former chairman of the Moapa Paiute tribe, William Anderson, tall and dignified and walking with a cane, explained to me what brought him: “I was just laying in bed in pain. I couldn’t get up, I couldn’t get up to go to the bathroom or go to the kitchen because I was in so much pain.”

An infection in his foot had spread to his spine and deteriorated the bone, exposing nerves. Doctors replaced the bone with titanium steel. For two years, the infection, even with prescription creams and antibiotics, kept coming back. The Indian Health Service recommended amputation of his foot.

Families keep close eye on medical marijuana debate

Matt Phillips said that when his daughter Lillie Reese was born two and a half years ago, everything seemed fine.

“She was a perfectly normal, perfectly healthy baby ... until she was four months old. She stopped smiling,” he said. “She stopped laughing. She stopped rolling over. She just stopped developing.”

Doctors performed numerous tests and found she was suffering from a type of epilepsy called infantile spasms.

“Basically, her brain was being scrambled, and she was having seizures. Twenty-four hours a day,” Phillips said.

“Her brain is structurally normal. Usually, when children have infantile spasms they find brain malformations or lesions or some sort of brain injury,” Phillips said. “But they don’t know why she is having them.”

Iowa Medical marijuana request rebuffed by pharmacy board

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy disappointed medical marijuana advocates again Monday.

Board members rebuffed a request that they recommend changing Iowa law’s classification of marijuana in a way that would make it easier to use the drug for medical purposes.

The board, which regulates medication sales, said it didn’t want to get involved now. “This is clearly a political issue at this point,” said board member James Miller, a Dubuque pharmacist.

2 widely different Georgia medical marijuana bills to butt heads

ATLANTA  -- Sebastien and Annett Cotte don't plan to come home to Atlanta from Denver until after their 4-year-old son Jagger dies -- or the Georgia Legislature passes a bill making medicinal marijuana legal.

At 15 months, doctors told the Cottes their son wouldn't make it to 3, then that he'd never see 4. But he did, and a few months ago they moved to Colorado, where marijuana use is legal, and began to treat his seizures with cannabis oil, his dad said Monday. "He has fewer seizures, but we can't come home if we don't have a bill."

It is unlikely that Georgia legislators won't pass some kind of bill; the question is what it will allow. The General Assembly has two radically different bills in front of it; only one of them would make cannabis oil available soon.

Jimmy Kimmel: Talk to Your Rabbits About Marijuana

The state of Utah is considering a bill that would allow the sale of edible marijuana for medical use. One DEA agent is actually speaking out against the proposal, because he believes rabbits will eat the marijuana plants and get high. In fact, there’s a whole new fake ad campaign we made up specifically targeted at rabbits on pot.

Weed business ownership still hidden in haze of smoke

Want a stake in the medical marijuana business but missed out on getting a coveted state license? You might not be too late.

Weed businesses that scored licenses to grow in Illinois are looking for investors.

But if the chance to get in on the ground floor of what’s already a $2.7 billion industry in the United States sounds too good to be true, insiders say the tiny number of patients so far permitted to use marijuana in Illinois is causing them sleepless nights.

They’re looking for tens of millions of dollars in financing to build marijuana farms — and to keep running while hoping the state will loosen its restrictions on who can use the drug.

Mexican cartels shifting into heroin as more USA states legalise marijuana

The growing legalization of cannabis in the United States is forcing Mexico's drug cartels to rethink their illicit business model, turning to opium poppy plantations and domestic pot consumption, experts say.

Americans have been legally allowed to light up joints in the US capital since late last month, joining Washington state and Alaska, while Oregon will follow suit in July.

A total of 23 US states have legalized the drug for medical use, and opinion polls show that a slim majority of Americans favor legalization.

The changes in the world's biggest drug market appear to have prompted the criminal organizations producing narcotics in Mexico to switch strategies.

Ben and Jerry's considers marijuana-infused ice cream

Don't bogart that spoon, man. Lemme get a hit off that cone, dude. Pass the bowl ... of ice cream?

Could Ben and Jerry's, the counterculture snack empire gone mainstream, be planning a marijuana-infused ice cream?

"Makes sense to me. You know, combine your pleasures," co-founder Ben Cohen said in an interview with HuffPost Live that's been buzzing among marijuana aficionados since it aired last month. Like attitudes about marijuana itself, the story went mainstream this week.

It makes some sense. Co-founder Jerry Greenfield noted that the duo has some experience with, uh, substances. And the company already gives a nod to the marijuana culture with flavor names such as "Half Baked."
