New Business Aims to Teach D.C. Residents How to Smoke Weed

When marijuana was legalized in the District last year, many people rejoiced, but some with less smoking experience scratched their heads. “Weed is legal, great!” they might have mused. “But how do I grow it? Where do I find it? How do I smoke it?”

Just a few months ago, the answer to many of those questions was “just Google it,” or “I dunno man, go ask Adam at Capitol Hemp.” But the D.C. School of Mary Jane, a new educational business based in Columbia Heights, aims to change all that.

D.C.'s Weed Scene Burns Bright In New Web Series

Dozens of differently-sized weed plants grow beneath lights as a plate of cocktail weenies goes by.

Did I die and go to heaven? Nope, I just stumbled on the set of East Coast Grow, currently filming at Brookland's Mess Hall Culinary Incubator.

The comedic web series from Aboveboard Productions focuses on the D.C. marijuana industry. "It's a unique setting that has never been approached in narrative," says Matt Doherty, co-creator and executive producer of East Coast Grow. "It's an opportunity to highlight the city and a community that you don't see in other productions. We don't normally see stuff that gives justice to the culture of this town."

New marijuana workplace web comedy series filming in DC

WASHINGTON - It has been just over a year since D.C. voters approved Initiative 71, which made it legal to possess and cultivate marijuana with some limitations. Now, it is not particularly surprising someone has decided this would make a great subject for a television show.

What do you get when you mix a woman with a film and media background and a man who has worked for years as a consultant for medical marijuana cultivation centers? One young duo hopes the answer is a smoking hot new fictional comedy series.

Washington D.C. has been the focus of plenty of hit shows, but one local couple said it is high time for a new kind of series -- one focused on D.C.'s marijuana industry.

D.C. smells like marijuana, and residents don’t really care

The smell near the Columbia Heights Metro station Wednesday night was unmistakable. A lit joint in hand, Tony Lee stood outside a residence talking with friends as the evening bustle passed them by, no one paying the group of men any special attention.

“The community I’m in, everyone engages in smoking,” said Lee, 34, a District resident who runs his own small construction firm. Plus, he said, if he’s not smoking, he detects the odor of other people getting high throughout the city on a daily basis anyway.

“I’ve grown accustomed to it,” he said.

This casual attitude to marijuana — and the distinctive waft that accompanies the smoking of it — seems to be the new norm in the District in the year since the city voted to legalize possession of small amounts of pot.
