Calls to legalise cannabis in Guernsey

cannabis plant

Could Guernsey be the first place in the British Isles where you can grow and buy cannabis legally? Licensed use of medicinal cannabis was agreed in 2020 with licences for growing and production following in 2021 and 2022. But does that mean the island is ready to legalise what is currently a Class B drug?

In June, politicians will be asked to vote on working towards legalising cannabis in this political term - it ends in 2025.

At the moment growing cannabis is against the law unless it is carried out under licence, while cannabis and cannabis resin are classified as Class B drugs.

Plan for Isle of Man medicinal cannabis facility

A science and innovation centre and sustainable energy park are also part of Peel NRE’s plans for 72 acres of land off Cooil Road in Braddan.

Peel has launched a consultation for the project, which it says could bring between £90m and £180m of investment to the island’s economy. It would also create local jobs in a variety of fields, including botany, research, technology and security.

In January 2021, the Isle of Man passed a resolution to legalise the growing, production and export of medicinal cannabis. It is still not, however, legal to consume medicinal cannabis on the island.

UK hemp co-op honored as refugee sanctuary

vegetables

A hemp farm is making positive headlines in the UK for providing food and produce, as well as sanctuary, to refugees in need.

A hemp farm in the United Kingdom is being honored as a sanctuary for refugees for its program to help immigrants seeking a better life. Hempen, a co-operative community focused on the benefits of hemp, was recognized as a Garden of Sanctuary by City of Sanctuary, a group working to create welcoming spaces for refugees in UK towns and cities.

Hempen’s community outreach project Growing Solidarity hosts weekly events on Tuesdays that give refugees the opportunity to be in nature and meet new friends. Participants are also taught to grow their own food, which they can do either on the farm or in their own gardens at home.

Stirling 'hemp cafe' given night-time green light

Claire Watson

The cafe in the city's Upper Craigs has been running for around two years.

A Stirling city centre cafe which uses ingredients and products from cannabis plants is to be allowed to open in the evenings. The Hemp Room Cafe at 44 Upper Craigs has been operating for around two years. However, as part of the planning permission approved by Stirling Council in November 2019, a condition restricted hours to Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6pm.

Owner Claire Watson submitted an application to council planners seeking to remove the original condition so the cafe could open until 11pm.

Now council planners have conditionally approved the bid, although with some elements of the original restriction remaining.

Does London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan Really Want To Decriminalize Cannabis In The UK’s Capital City?

England

The mayor of the UK's capital Sadiq Khan (belonging to the Labour party), is planning to develop a scheme to offer an alternative to arrest those caught with a small amount of cannabis.

According to The Guardian, the diversion scheme, which is still under development, would be based on providing classes and counseling, rather than arrest, to under-25-years-old people caught in possession of small quantities of cannabis.

The plan would involve three boroughs of the UK's capital, but the pilot scheme is yet to receive approval from the mayor's office for policing and crime.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Khan was considering decriminalizing cannabis in London. However, Khan denied that report, insisting he did not have the power to do so.

prison structure

Police believe inmates “would tear off strips of the A4 lined paper to smoke.”

Two men have been arrested in connection with a scheme to provide inmates at prisons across the U.K. with sheets of paper soaked in drugs, including the synthetic cannabinoids mamba and spice.

Two dawn-hour raids at separate addresses in Wolverton, U.K. ended with the West Midlands Police taking the two men into custody, notes a police statement.

“It’s suspected they’re behind a series of letters posted to 10 prisons that contained sheets of writing paper soaked in a solution of synthetic drugs like mamba or spice,” according to the statement. Police further believe inmates “would tear off strips of the A4 lined paper to smoke.”
