Since the start of the year, Alberta RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit has issued 177 fines and seized more than $498,000 in contraband, including cannabis, unstamped cigarettes and cash.

In a news release, the RCMP reports its goal is to “enforce traffic safety while also detecting any criminal activity that might be making its way across our province via our roads and highways.”

From behind the counter of a northwest Calgary cannabis shop, Alex Macyszyn serves a handful of midday customers. 

He has plenty of company in his line of work: there are at least three other cannabis stores within a five-minute drive, and another one that recently closed down. 

"There's way too many cannabis stores just in this area," said Macyszyn.

"It makes the competition really hard." 

A new analysis of the Canadian cannabis retail landscape suggests Alberta may have more cannabis stores than the market can sustain.

“Alberta’s growing hemp industry is helping to build a strong agriculture sector that creates jobs and brings tremendous opportunities to communities across the province,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food in a press release.

Contraband valued at almost a quarter of a million dollars, including various drugs and weapons, was confiscated earlier this week at the Edmonton Institution, a maximum-security federal institution.

Citing the vigilance of staff members at the maximum-security facility, hashish, methamphetamine, shatter, pills (including fentanyl), stabbing weapons, cellphones, cellphone chargers and SIM cards were among the items seized on May 10, according to the Prairie Region of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).

Residents within Wheatland County may soon see increased accessibility for recreational cannabis, as three development permits were approved during the April 12 Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) meeting.

Permits for recreational cannabis retailers were approved to continue development for locations in Origin Business Park, Cluny and Gleichen – with the latter being the most debated location among commissioners.

According to administration, the county received seven responses from the community in support of the Gleichen retailer and 14 against, after circulating the permit application to the community. A total of 31 responses were also received after the permit applicant canvased the Gleichen community.
