Haze lingers over medical marijuana use in workplace

DANVILLE -- Marijuana has long been banned in many workplaces, but with medical marijuana now being legally dispensed in the state, many employers have questions. Tuesday, they got some answers.

There is still a lot of gray area and employers actually have a lot of flexibility in how they handle the law. A conference at Danville Area Community College was aimed at helping bosses figure out what's okay and what's not okay with marijuana use.

Medical marijuana use is not protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act, even by card-carrying patients since it's federally banned.

5 Things to Know Before You Interview With a Cannabis Company

I was a successful leader of one of the largest consulting firms in the world. I coached some of the world’s top business leaders. Then I left corporate America to work in the cannabis industry, where I assumed my decade-plus of leadership experience, corporate design knowledge and other skills would be of value.

I was both right and wrong.

To be sure, many of the people I met in the industry appreciated the help I could offer their emerging companies. But it was my initial approach, and my lack of intimate knowledge of the industry and culture, that nearly killed my budding -- no pun intended -- new career. So, I began working around the clock to make myself expert in this new industry.

Marijuana dispensaries warned to close up shop

Brandy Cavanagh, general manager of Mid-Island Health and Wellness Association, is upset after receiving written notice from the RCMP last Thursday that her marijuana dispensary has seven days to suspend operations.

Medical marijuana dispensary managers plan a united front and appeals to government in the wake of an ultimatum from the Nanaimo RCMP to shut down shop or face arrests.

The Nanaimo RCMP put 10 medical marijuana dispensaries on notice Thursday that they had seven days to stop the sale of marijuana and marijuana derivatives or they could be subject to police enforcement.

Medical marijuana shops have been growing in number in Nanaimo, selling bud, tinctures and marijuana-infused brownies.

The US university making students the masters of marijuana

Jean Kennedy has degrees in biology and a Master’s in special education. Now, she’s trying to decide what to do with her third degree: a  certificate of achievement from Oaksterdam University, the Harvard Business School of marijuana.

“I’m Italian,” said Ms Kennedy, 56, a retired high school biology teacher with graying hair and a heavy New York accent. “You know Italians, we grow tomatoes. Maybe I’ll grow some plants.”

Horticulture 102 is one of the many subjects she studies at Oaksterdam, whose campus is set amid the hip cafés, restaurants and cannabis dispensaries of downtown Oakland. Founded in 2007, the school sees itself as a training ground for citizen advocates in the fight to legalise marijuana.

Op-ed: Denver should embrace new biz, let retail pot moratorium expire

Denver is in the midst of discussing the end of the moratorium for retail marijuana businesses. The moratorium is set to expire January 1, 2016.

As the president of the Colorado Cannabis Chamber of Commerce (C4), a statewide organization dedicated to the business growth of the cannabis industry, I believe it is an important step for Denver to not renew the moratorium.

GAMADES: Potential marijuana-funded scholarship a stepping stone to improve Colorado education system

Beginning in 2017, high school graduates in a Colorado county will be able to apply for a college scholarship funded by a marijuana tax.

Voters in Pueblo County approved a measure that would incrementally increase taxes on marijuana by 5 percent over the next five years in order to fund college scholarships and other community improvement projects. Funding education via a tax on a recreational drug is something Time called “a concept that probably would have been laughed off as a total joke just a few years ago.”

County officials believe this measure is the first of its nature and are hopeful that this program will allow more families in their community send their children to school.
