California To Hire Medical Marijuana Chief

Good news for civic-minded stoners this week, as California’s government posted the top job for the Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation, which will become California’s weed regulatory agency by 2018.

This could be your big break (if you can get off the couch and stop eating Doritos). The position is an opportunity to be one of the first people ever to regulate medical marijuana. Plus, the pay is fantastic, as you'll be taking home a tidy $115,608 to $128,808 annually.

Sound groovy? It does if you love writing rules and regulations, such as licensing standards for distributors! Potheads notoriously love laws, so this should be a cinch.

Legalized marijuana won't save Indian reservations

You know what our most impoverished, crime-ridden, ill-educated communities in the country need? More drugs.

On Tuesday, the Seneca Nation in Western New York voted to consider growing and selling medical marijuana on its territory. Other Indians tribes are going to follow suit. Thanks to a new ruling by the Justice Department, tribes can now distribute marijuana, irrespective of the policy of the state in which they’re located.

Perhaps this sounds familiar. It’s how we got Indian casinos. The 1998 Indian Gaming Regulation Act (IGRA) cemented the notion that Indian lands were sovereign and answerable only to the federal government, not the state governments, with regard to gambling.

Marijuana business school seeks to prepare small business owners for legalization

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A failed attempt to legalize marijuana in Ohio loomed large at a so-called "cannabis academy" held Saturday in Cleveland, but speakers urged attendees to not give up and to prepare for eventual legalization of the drug.

During the event, which was put on by ComfyTree Enterprises at the FirstMerit Convention Center, speakers from several groups put forth plans to either decriminalize or legalize marijuana in the coming year.

Jacob Wagner, an attorney and organizer for Legalize Ohio 2016, said his organization will seek legalization next year without the use of a mascot such as Buddie, a part cannabis plant and part superhero that traveled the state as part of the failed Issue 3 campaign.

OSU plans industrial hemp study

After months of pressure from Oregon’s congressional delegation, Oregon State University announced Thursday it has requested federal approval to conduct research on industrial hemp, a non-intoxicating cousin of marijuana.

OSU faculty members have applied to the Drug Enforcement Administration for permission to do the work, which will focus on productivity, yield and growing conditions for hemp in Western Oregon.

That’s something that the state’s representatives in Washington have been advocating strenuously.

Fired medical marijuana users eligible for unemployment benefits after court ruling

DETROIT, MI -- The Michigan Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal from the Unemployment Insurance Agency in a case involving benefits for people fired from jobs over medical marijuana use.

The denial means people with medical marijuana cards who lost work after failing drug tests will continue to be eligible for unemployment benefits, based on an October 2014 appeals court ruling.

The Unemployment Insurance Agency appealed lower court decisions out of Macomb and Ingham counties that reversed rulings from the Michigan Compensation Appellate Commission that said fired workers were disqualified from jobless benefits.

The state appeals court in one consolidated decision upheld those rulings.

The USA may be about to entirely legalise marijuana

US presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has introduced a bill to the Senate today that proposes the legalisation of the recreational use of marijuana nationwide. “The Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act” would entirely remove weed both from the Controlled Substances Act and from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s “most dangerous drugs list”.

Sanders principal motivation for the move is the high numbers of Americans who have their career and social prospects destroyed by arbitrary convictions for offences related to marijuana. Speaking as George Mason University last week, Sanders explained, “Too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana uses. That’s wrong. That has got to change.”

FEDERAL RESEARCHERS STUDY WASHINGTON CANNABIS FARM

In an unprecedented move, federal researchers visited a medical cannabis farm in Vancouver, Washington to gauge the health impacts of working in the industry and performing tasks such as cultivation and processing. Does the repetitive motion of trimming marijuana flowers promote carpal tunnel? Are those processing dozens of pounds of freshly harvested cannabis, over the long term, in danger of inhaling plant particles that may be harmful to their health?
