UN: Countries should consider banning cannabis product advertising given 'the gap in risk perception and reality'

The new 2021 World Drug Report shows cannabis potency has skyrocketed in parts of the world and that has the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) thinking member states should consider outlawing weed advertising.

In just 24 years, “cannabis potency had increased by as much as four times in parts of the world, even as the percentage of adolescents who perceived the drug as harmful fell by as much as 40 per cent,” notes a UNODC press release accompanying the release of the report Thursday.

Delta-8 THC Threatens Legal Cannabis Industry

Let’s be honest, the cannabis market is becoming a cut-throat one, with everyone looking to make a buck, a range of low-level and possibly dangerous products on the market, and a rush by local governments to save revenue by outlawing what they can’t regulate. This brings up the question of whether a hemp-derived THC like delta-8 threatens the revenue of the legal cannabis industry, and explains why recreational states are quickly banning it.

CannTrust's former CEO and two directors charged with fraud over unlicensed pot growing scandal

Fraud charges have been laid against CannTrust Holdings Inc.’s former chief executive Peter Aceto and two former directors, all of whom face possible jail time of up to five years if found guilty in a sweeping quasi-criminal case led by the Ontario Securities Commission.

Company co-founder and former board chair Eric Paul and former director Mark Litwin are also charged with insider trading following a months-long investigation by Canada’s largest capital markets regulator. The OSC moved in following blockbuster revelations in the summer of 2019 that a Health Canada inspection of the publicly traded company uncovered unlicensed cannabis growing at its Pelham, Ont. facility.

B.C. government to allow home cannabis delivery starting July 15

Home delivery of cannabis is an advantage for B.C.’s illegal producers that Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth says is ending as of July 15.

B.C. had the biggest illegal cannabis market in Canada when recreational use was legalized in 2018, and Farnworth says allowing online ordering and delivery is another step to a goal of getting to 70 per cent market share for the network of government and licensed retail stores in four years. The COVID-19 pandemic has restricted retail store attendance and illegal dealers have benefited.

Tiny residents express concerns about cannabis grow ops

marijuana plant

Tiny Township residents voiced their concerns about cannabis within the municipality at a recent virtual town hall meeting - their first opportunity since an illegal grow op in the township was shut down by OPP months ago.

Comments were based around the illegal grow operation on Concession Road 6 East, where OPP seized over 9,000 cannabis plants during a drug bust on April 20.

"How can citizens and politicians of Tiny Township join together to stop legal grow-ops from sprouting up in our area?” asked Joanne Ritchie.

She continued by laying out the timeline of events for the “size of a Wal-Mart” operation, remarking upon its 2020 construction permit allowance, as well as the installation of enough hydro “to supply seven large homes.”

Delta 8 Is Getting A Lot Of Attention - Not All Of It Is Good

If you feel like you’ve been catching a lot of Delta-8 THC content in the media lately, those aren’t just your social media apps hacking your brain. Hemp-derived Delta-8 THC is having a big moment in 2021 in terms of popularity and, most recently, in terms of concerns over legality, safety, and accuracy. This hot new cannabinoid has been branded as “legal marijuana” as the main intoxicating compound in cannabis but one most commonly derived from hemp for commercial use. Social listening data reveals that conversations around Delta-8 grew by a whopping 163% from December 2020 to April 2021, but all is not rosy for this latest trend in cannabis or for companies jumping into production to respond to the surging interest.
