Pennsylvania School Board Backs Marijuana Facility, Citing Economic Development Benefits

The Waynesboro Area School Board this week finalized a letter of support for a proposed medical marijuana growing and processing facility, saying the district appreciates the economic development that could come with the project in Wharf Road Industrial Park.

The school board noted that it supports the industrial growth, but will not take a position on the potential benefits of marijuana for medical conditions.

A letter to the Pennsylvania Department of Health notes the district receives federal funding for some of its K-12 programs and recognizes that federal law does not legalize medical marijuana.

Maine Poised to Push Back Retail Cannabis Until 2018

State lawmakers on Thursday unanimously approved legislation delaying the retail sale of cannabis until at least February 2018.

A referendum approved by voters in November gave state regulators nine months to adopt rules for marijuana legalization. The legislation will extend that deadline.

The legislation also makes clear that individuals younger than 21 years old can’t possess or use cananbis. Growing and possessing recreational marijuana, however, is still legal starting Monday.

The bill is headed for the desk of Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who’s called on lawmakers for money for the rule-making process.

Nevada Recreational Marijuana Program to Get Started with $870K

Nevada's fledgling recreational marijuana program finally has some money to get off the ground.

The state's Interim Finance Committee on Thursday approved a seed loan of approximately $871,000 for the startup of the new program under the Department of Taxation.

"We just want to make sure that we are meeting our responsibility and getting this all done by the deadline," said Stephanie Klapstein, spokeswoman for the department.

The program will be regulating and taxing the recreational marijuana industry since Nevadans voted in November to legalize the substance as of Jan. 1.

How Cannabis Became Illegal in Israel in the First Place

Cannabis has been illegal in the Holy Land longer than nearly any other place on the globe, and it is all because of a particular British gentlemen and an Egyptian doctor.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) announced Thursday that he supports the decriminalization of cannabis in Israel. If Erdan's initiative is adopted by the government it will end a long history of criminal prohibition of the drug, especially in light of the fact that cannabis has been illegal here longer than nearly any other place on the globe.

The relatively early date of cannabis prohibition in the Holy Land is coincidental and is mostly due to the personal history of a particular British gentleman by the name of Ronald Storrs.

Farmers Rally Behind South Carolina Industrial Hemp Bill

Once again, though, state law enforcement is fighting the legislation..

Earlier this week, our website reported on disingenuous efforts by leading South Carolina law enforcement figures aimed at blocking medical marijuana legalization in the Palmetto State.

To read our exclusive report on this unfortunate brand of taxpayer-funded lobbying, click here.

As we’ve stated repeatedly, whatever you think of legalizing pot for recreational purposes (most people are for it) – legalizing medical marijuana is a moral imperative.

Marijuana society decries raids on dispensaries in Saint John

Advocates for medical marijuana are denouncing a series of police raids in Saint John on cannabis dispensaries in the city.

Six stores were raided by officers from the Saint John city police and nearby forces on Tuesday and 12 people were charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, echoing earlier raids in Halifax, Toronto, Montreal and elsewhere.

City police chief John Bates has said the dispensaries are operating illegally and police cannot "hypothesize" what the Liberal government will do with their marijuana legislation, or when they will do it.

Florida: Medical marijuana lags in the Legislature

Debates have begun to put voter-approved medical pot into state law and patients' hands.

State senators and officials with the Florida Department of Health have rolled out their initial plans to enact Amendment 2, which was supported by 71 percent of voters in November, and House leaders are finalizing their own ideas.

But they have already earned criticism from advocacy groups who say the state's plans are falling short of what voters intended.

Ben Pollara, who ran the medical marijuana campaign and is now lobbying the Legislature's implementation of it said DOH rules are "in direct contradiction" of Amendment 2 and that the Senate is off to "an encouraging start."

Wisconsin medical marijuana legalization gaining mainstream support

Medical marijuana use should be legal in Wisconsin.

Twenty-eight states — Arkansas, Florida, North Dakota and Ohio joined in November — and the District of Columbia allow for such use. California was the first to legalize medical marijuana 11 years ago.

There are signs that Wisconsin may eventually adopt that stance. Although Republicans in the state often have opposed such measures, The Associated Press reported that state Sen. Van Wanggaard, R-Racine, is circulating a bill that would make possessing a marijuana extract used to prevent seizures legal with a doctor’s certification.
